7970 Adivice Needed!

Thread Starter
Recently I have been building a gaming desktop and have come down to the last part of my purchase: buying the graphics card. I've been waiting to get the MSI 7970 Lightning, but I cannot wait forever to complete my build. I see that XFX has some good prices on their reference 7970's. My end goal for my computer is to have 2x7970's in Crossfire and watercooled.

I am very interested in Overclocking (which is why I wanted the 7970 Lightning in the first place). However, I have read that it is possible to get a reference 7970 to become a GHz Edition with a BIOS flash. In essence, it seems to me that this makes getting a cheaper 7970 (such as the XFX) a good deal. My question is, how safe is it to overclock/flash BIOS a card like this? How do these cards fare in the OC community? anyone with user experience?

Would getting two of these cards be a better option than waiting forever for a 7970 Lightning? I intend to overclock these pretty heavily so I thought i'd ask the pro's. Any tips for this newbie are welcome!

Any particular reason for this card?

I would wait for the MSI 7970 lighting. I know that the NON lightning version that looks like a lightning is voltage locked. So not sure how it would clock.. OR a Shappire dual X cooler since I've heard most can clock high.

If you want to water cool them, you will probably want reference cards since it will give you the biggest selection of blocks to choose from.

Any idea if these cards are being made anymore? Can't seem to find any.

see that black pcb with an AMD logo near the bottom? that is a reference card. easy to find a waterblock for it. no need to flash the bios. oh, it will overclock. Plus, it is highly recommended by tsm106. you'll see him around. especially in the ATI card section.thumb.gif

I've looked up a little about this card. What makes it so special (other than the fact that it's a true reference PCB)?

i don't own that particular brand but you mentioned watercooling and that is a 'true' reference card. others are based on reference design.

if you see Stay Puft, he can tell you more of the quality of the Diamond 7970 - he bought 4 of those. What i do know is that particular brand shows good results.

you can also ask in this thread . . .
