Help needed asap with Windows 8

Thread Starter
So I'm working on my taxes and Windows 8 restarts on its own and the blue help screen pops up telling me it can't start. So seeing as I created a restore point earlier today when I downloaded Turbo tax I carefully read thru and let it do its thing. I read that none of the user files or programs would be affected.

Well it starts up and instead of using a restore point it used a 7 day old backup and removed all my tax info, saved games and documents! Didn't panic at this point, figured I would just undo the restore point. Not a chance. Somehow all my restore points are gone...completely. I've struggled with this searching google for hours with no luck.

Any suggestions? I'm not going to do anything until hopefully someone can help me out. TIA

I have never used a restore point but I always thought that once you have restored to a previous point, you could not go forward again? Please correct me if I am wrong.

Still reading on google and tried the file history and it only lists the 7 day old backup. This really makes no sense as I create a restore point everytime I install anything. I should have at least 10 restore points but their gone.

I have used it many times in Win 7, Vista and XP with no issue.

And it keeps getting stranger. I remembered I had Windows 7 also creating restore points for both 7 and 8. Restart into 7 and ALL the restore points are gone and system restore is turned off. I'm the only one that uses my gaming pc. I'm starting to think maybe someone hacked my pc. I originally scanned in a lot of my tax info into Win 7 and 2 of the W2's are not in the folder I put them in frown.gif

Yes when you are done it will ask if you want to keep for change back to original.
Not exact words.Windows system restore is not always reliable and does not always work
as it is supposed to.

Is there any software I can run to get back my documents, hopefully free? I just realized that all my unemployment info got lost and I have to furnish that info to be able to get unemployment.

I called MS and got transferred and ended up getting disconnected. My panic level is quickly approaching the limit. Can anyone please help?

Well seeing all the help I've received I'm giving up. But in case anyone else is dual booting Win 7 and Win 8 I found out what happened to my restore points. Every time you change your boot order Win 8 deletes all your restore points in 7. I can manually create a restore point in 7 reboot into 8 and then back to 7 and the restore point is gone. I just did this 4 times and each time it deletes it. It also does the same in reverse, create restore in 8 and then boot 7 reboot into 8 and its gone. Great setup there MS frown.gif Thanks everyone for all the help.

Wow!

So it all boiled down to the dual boot configuration of Windows 8 and 7?

I believe someone in MS should get a handle on this pronto.

Sorry to hear about the losses incurred though. frown.gif

By the way dual boot is probably the cause of this:

* http://helpdeskgeek.com/windows-7/system-restore-points-missing-in-windows-7/ => If you are dual booting Windows 7 with another operating system like Windows XP, Vista or Windows 8 and both operating systems are on the same physical disk, one OS may be causing problems with the other. Whenever you restart, the restore points may get deleted. I’m not exactly sure what specific setup would cause this, but it has been reported by users who dual boot, especially with Windows XP. Trying removing the dual boot or installing each operating system on it’s own disk.

First thanks for the reply. I read thru your links and found what their saying not completely correct. I have Win 7 and 8 on separate hard drives. Yet I'm still having the same issues. And the more I poke around the weirder it gets. Some games in Win 7 stayed the same while others somehow got restored back 8 days. In Win 8 I found some of my missing documents by running Recuva yet others are completely gone. I still cannot understand how Win 8 made all the changes on 7.

MS has been no help at all. I spent over $30 on apps that are gone and cannot get refunded. And they really need to hire people who speak and understand English. I really wish that someone would make a different os that still had the functionality of windows.
