Help! FX-6300 build just won't post and I'm at my wits end. I'm in 5 beeps hell!

Hi All,

I'm trying to put together a new system and I cannot for the life of me get it to post, it just beeps 5 times and no video displays. I've only done this once before about 7 years ago so I might just be doing something wrong. Whatever it is, I'm about to go insane. Here's some detail:

The components:
CPU: AMD FX-6300 Vishera 3.5GHz (4.1GHz Turbo) Socket AM3+ 95W Six-Core Desktop Processor FD6300WMHKBOX
CPU COOLER: COOLER MASTER Hyper 212 Plus RR-B10-212P-G1 "Heatpipe Direct Contact" Long Life Sleeve 120mm CPU Cooler Compatible ...
MOBO: ASRock 970 EXTREME3 AM3+ AMD 970 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard
GPU: SAPPHIRE 100354XTL Radeon HD 7870 XT w/Boost 2GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 x16 CrossFireX Support Video Card
MEMORY: G.SKILL Sniper Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1866 (PC3 14900) Desktop Memory Model F3-14900CL9D-8GBSR
STORAGE: SAMSUNG 840 Series MZ-7TD120BW 2.5" 120GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)
PSU: CORSAIR Builder Series CX430 430W ATX12V v2.3 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Active PFC Power Supply

The results:

Using a carboard box as a platform, I connect the mobo, the PSU, a stick of memory, the video card, heatsink/fan, and the little speaker and short the power jumper with a flat head screqdriver. The fans start up then a few seconds later I get 5 beeps. Not real fast beeps like "beep-beep-beep-beep-beep", but more like "beeeeep-beeeeep-beeeeep-beeeeeep-beeeeep". Each beep is probably 1/2 second in duration. No video displays on the monitor either, which I have tried connecting both by DVI and HDMI.

I've unplugged and replugged everything in, tried without the video card, tried with the video card in both pci-e slots, moved the memory stick around, and removed the heatsink backplate and standoff screws. I've also removed the CPU and inspected for bent or missing pins, but it looks okay and seems to insert just fine.

But always 5 beeps, every time.

Is there anything left to try? Or perhaps I've simply overlooked some obvious detail or doing something fundamentally wrong due to my inexperience? I'm hoping you guys might be able to help me figure this out because I'm very close to taking it to a local shop and just paying them to put it together, which sucks.

Have you looked up the error code in the manual for your motherboard. That will tell you what the problem is.

I know it seems silly but make sure all the cables are connected. Seen quite a few people through the years that have not connected the 8 pin EPS cable for example. But yes, check your manual for what that beep code means.

The error code indicates "processor error" according to everything I've found online. The Asrock user manual was no help.

As far as I can tell the processor looks fine and doesn't have any bent pins. I'll try yet again to remove and re-attach everything, but I'm not hopeful. I'm even more skeptical as I've read a number of posts now about the Asrock 970 Extreme3 boards not posting. I'll keep at it for another day, but after a week of this I'm about ready to either take it to a shop or just buy a different board and try to return this one.

Any other ideas guys?

It could be the BIOS needs updating to support the new vishera architecture, check the support page to see what bios the 6300 is supported from, it may require an older compatible cpu to be put in to update the bios before the board will post???

Gyro

Only way you will be able to tell is if you can take it into a shop and see if they can flash the bios, test the cpu or both, unless you know somebody with an older am3 socket cpu biggrin.gif

on other forums i have found stories of asrock sending bios chips for free overnighted....

to quote what was said " If you get an error with FX 4100 or above it's an outdated bios. Contact asrock customer support at support@asrockamerica.com, or 1-909-590-8308. Trust me they know of this issue and will send you a replacement bios chip for free"

this was with a different mobo but you can always try it....
