It is something that you could get away with in court, but then we are not in court. We are in the real world. Well, most of us are.

You can argue if technically someone lied or not until the end of time, the fact is that EA have annoyed a lot of people, handled things very badly and richly deserve the derision that is currently being driected at them.

I am nearing the point of certainty that the online calculation was limited to the global market values from what I am reading.

I cannot understand why there has been no comment on this from EA and Maxis...all I've seen out of them thus far is "We don't comment on rumors". How far does this have to go before it is no longer considered a rumor?

I'm going to reply to this once. The decision to allow sim city offline mod discussions was made by the management of OCN a few days ago.

Officially the always online component of the game is not DRM, the DRM system used is Origin. Disabling the always online connection is no different from disabling a feature like natural disasters from the game. If we disallow the discussion of this mod purely on the basis of modification of game files we would have to disallow almost all modding discussions bar a few very mod friendly games.

Now please continue the discussion but this thread is not about the DRM and OCN's decision to keep these threads. If you wish to complain, please do so in a PM to one of our managers.

Thanks everyone.

That is a logical and well thought out rational train of thought. You know, of course, many on OCN will hate that. biggrin.gif

Not really, save face and slow down possible sales until they can come up with a response. I'm guessing the free games people get from Maxis has something to do with it, especially since they didn't give out crap games. BF3 and DS3, I wouldn't have expected either. Now that it's resolved, they probably dont' care about face so much. Cause if you think about it, I highly doubt a company would release games like that over "server issues". This is probably pre-emptive as to keep anything else from going awry, customers have compensation for the loss.

[edit]

Especially with the listing price of DS3 on Origin:

http://store.origin.com/store/ea/en_US/pd/productID.263928000

They gave products with what one would still consider a good retail value, at least that's what the newest news seems to say. That's a lot of loss over server issues.

As far as Grizzles arguments go, they are entertaining smile.gif. I seem to recall him and I going back and forth about this same exact thing about a year ago.

Most of you said what I want to. Overall, I am dissapointed in this release. So many things held back for no other purpose than what it seems, a phone home program. The great thing though, is Maxis wasn't kidding when they said that modding would be easy. They made sure of it with the comments in the config files.

When region play works correctly (as it still does not 60+ hours in) and I'm not limited due to a server being "full", I will enjoy it more. Traffic non-with-standing anyways. Worker's commuting hasn't ever worked correctly for me. Not during launch day, and not now (2 weeks later).

And Lucy's latest comment about the game being an MMO from the ground up... well... it's the best single-multiplayer game out there lachen.gif. It's like calling D3 an MMO.

This isn't even considering that the "computation" being done is nothing more than distributing your save file to the other cities in the region, which could easily be done on the local computer. The only thing that the internet is needed for is the Global Marketplay.

And for the furies of hector:

Bring back freaking Cheetah Speed!

None is an impossible argument to make. If nothing else there's calculations done for global market prices (like how everyone thinks that since computers are more expensive to make than TVs, computers will sell for more, but since everyone thought that and flooded the market, TVs are going for ~$50k more per 1000). Additionally, when you're in multiplayer, the server is doing calculations to adjust the numbers moving between cities based on proximity/connections and other cities use. Are these significant for a 2-3 city region? Probably not, but in sheer volume for a 16 city region they would be. These calculations are still there in pure singleplayer, but they're just adding/subtracting by 0 and multiplying/dividing by 1 because everything is remaining static except your city. It's something they're going to have to work on, because I've got ~4 Double Decker bus terminals in the region with 24 buses each, and my two large cities need them, but since they're inactive when I'm not playing them, my small city of 20k suddenly has every bus in the region in it and that's causing traffic jams. As is, singleplayer regions aren't nearly as interesting as multiplayer regions, and the static global market of an offline version would make them even less interesting. The game's core is designed around multiplayer, and that shows with the single-player version already available.

While I agree that some of the derision is deserved, a fair portion of it is because people expected SimCity 5, which this game is not. Additionally, a good portion of the criticism is from people who haven't even played the game but are upset it wasn't the game they wanted. I actually see a lot of parallels between this and ME3, where ownership of the franchise is debated between the fans and the developers because a portion of the playerbase disagrees with the developers. A lot of people are unable to distinguish between something being something they don't like and something that's actually bad. Take COD, I haven't bought one since MW1 and I genuinely believe it's a bad franchise for the genre as pointed out by that other thread, but I'll stop short of outright calling it a bad game because it isn't for me.

P.S. Nocturin, build the city around avenues to fix traffic problems (that are being fixed even more on the engine level) and Cheetah speed was only disabled for ~24 hours. If it's still disabled for you I'd suggest re-downloading it, it's quite a small install anyways.

I'll re-download the game to see if it fixes cheeta speed for me, even though it's updated 4 times since then. I haven't seen that they re-enabled it during one of the patch notes, but there's no difference between llama and cheetah. Maybe this will fix the worker commute too. Global market doesn't work for me either, it's working for you? What server?

As far as traffic, reverted to single avenue cities until that fix your showed me is implemented. That's freaking awesome.

If I could get region control while in single player, I would be tickled absolutly pink. Not gonna happen though.

You don't need to go overboard on avenues, just enough where you don't have roads feeding other roads too much:

Note that everything off the left hand side of the screen is both irradiated and heavily polluted because of the radiation. I'll repeat what I've said before, never turn off your colleges to save money if you've got a nuclear plant.

Grizzle, you can't help yourself, can you ? You're commenting as if the problem is solved, but it still isn't. So the problem should still be your biggest pet peeve with the game.

From the comments to the video:
Quote:
there is still a problem here.. once the congestion is done on the dirt road and there is 0 traffic on it.. it is now again the shortest route and the cars avoid the shortest route completely... you see that at around 1:00 in the video that and by the end of the video the traffic should go back to choosing the shortest route (the dirt road) because its no longer clogged.

And only someone who hasn't played the game would miss the fallacy of that comment. Avenues are faster with higher speed limits. Shortest route is chosen by time, not distance, with the new system(and congestion being a modifier of that).

Traffic problems are already avoidable if you know how the sims choose routes and design them around it (see my city above), but the new system allows less-planned cities function.
