Old i5-750, OC or upgrade?

Thread Starter
I did my first PC build a few years back, but it is really starting to show its age.

CPU- i5-750 Lynnfield 2.66 (stock cooling)
Mobo- ASUS P7P55D-E
GFX- Radeon HD 5850
Power- 750w

I have never gotten into overclocking, and am wondering if it would be worth it to squeeze a bit more life out of the CPU. My old 1156 board means any upgrade would require both a new CPU+board. I probably need a new video card plus my monitor just died a few days ago, so I need to keep costs down if possible.

I use my machine mostly for gaming, lately DOTA 2 and Planetside 2. My rig has been doing rather poorly with Planetside (even worse since last patch) and I am concerned for when the DayZ standalone hits.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I have yet to have a game drag my 750 down at all, it's still a really capable CPU. I recently upgraded from a 5850 to my 7950 about a month and a half ago and it made a big difference in games for me. Planetside 2 plays butter smooth for me. I would keep what you have and upgrade the GPU as the CPU still has a lot of life left in it. Also how much memory do you have?

any cpu cooler that you purchase would be applicable on an 1155 socket. Maybe get a decent cooler and see how much performance a good overclock would net you.

The 5850 is a decent GPU still.

I don't think it is worth upgrading yet. Hold on to it for a little bit longer until haswell comes out. In the meantime I think you should buy a cheap CPU cooler (cooler master 212 or something similar) and overclock it. Then when the new i5s come out you can get one and if your CPU cooler doesn't work with it you aren't at a huge loss.
