Did you notice I gave you all the credit (or blame, depending how you look at it wink.gif ) for getting me into water cooling? The Antec 920 you gave me has found a home in my 965 BE system - I've yet to try to OC it though (it doesn't have any hard drives yet). That thing was a great little WC and actually competes with the H220.

I thought about doing a custom loop, but still don't really know what I'm doing with WC though, and figured I could turn the H220 into a custom loop later. Still probably wasn't the best decision, but we live and learn I guess. It's my second build, and mistakes were definitely made (other than just the H220). Can't wait for the next build, but it'll be a while. I need to back off the spending spree for a bit, and I'll probably wait for a couple more generations of new hardware.

Thanks for stopping by!

Kinda busy lately... still I am, in fact... too much work, 12 hours + 3 h for commute... is just crazy.

I'm glad that I made you to switch to WC.... You'll never go back to air, right?
That's happened to me, 4-5 years ago. All my rigs are watercooled, even my HTPC

don't blame yourself for that H220, I didn't want it to look like that, but for some extra $$$ I would've chosen a custom loop.
anyway is an extra 100MHz, but much quieter than the Antec 920

Not bad, but the voltage is pretty high for 4.7 giggles because I didn't get lucky with this chip - it takes 1.548v (including LLC) to stabilize it. This is with all 8 cores enabled and all power saving features off (C'n'Q, Turbo, unused core disabler, C1E, APM, SVM, spread spectrums, etc.)

Looks like it has a stock VID of 1.380v (ouch), although it'll run all the way up to 4.4 GHz stable on 1.35v, which is odd. Not sure if ASUS is just misreporting the stock VID or what. It also had my CPU/NB voltage way high, I think it was 1.35v, so I took it down to 1.175v to get rid of some extra heat there as well.

Seeing how it's not recommended to take this chip above 1.55v, it looks like 4.7 is the max OC on this one. Sometimes you get lucky, most of the time you get an average chip, and other times you get unlucky. It looks like I got unlucky. Stock VID of 1.380v though?? It almost seems like it should have been binned as an 8320 instead. It must have BARELY made the threshold for the 8350 bin. I think the H220 probably could have pushed it further with lower temps if it was a decent chip and could go nuts with lower voltages, but such is not the case with this one. Unless my Prime95 errors were memory-related, I'm not sure. The memory is rated at 1866 with 9-10-9-28-2T @ 1.50v, which is exactly where I have everything set. Bad memory module? Maybe. It's very difficult to distinguish where P95 errors come from.

It still errors in P95 @ 4.7 with 1.548v, which has GOT to be pretty much impossible for the CPU. I've heard rumors that P95 hates the FX-83XX series though. It passes IBT with 20 iterations and has run stable in Windows all day today, including a bunch of benchmarking going on with Unigine, Sandra and 3DMark11. I feel like I might have to resort to the "use it and see if it ever bluescreens" method of determining stability, as much as I hate to do that. I'm tempted to Memtest it, but I've seen Memtest go for 24 hours without finding anything when the issue does turn out to be memory.

Sounds somewhat better, but yeah that is a really poor chip. I've given up at P95 stability with these chips, I don't do anything so important that I can't handle a hang now and again anyways so I don't stress too much over it. If it passes 25 runs of IBT with 90% RAM I'm satisfied with it.

Seriously though, put some fans on that damn VRM heatsink, I dropped 10*C off of package temps and was able to shave .050V off of my Vcore for 5.0ghz with the addition of some 80mm fans strapped to the heatsink.

I could even be wrong about the voltage thing, I'm not even sure. It might not even have to be as high as it's set right now, and like I said, it's at max voltage and still not Prime stable. I've pretty much given up on Prime too. I do know if I lower it down like 0.07v from where it's at, it will bluescreen under Prime though. I'm mostly getting rounding errors ("rounding was 0.5, expecting less than 0.4") and mostly on one particular core.

I might consider putting fans on the VRM, but honestly though, I've kind of given up on trying to push it further. It seems fine under normal everyday use (although Adobe Premiere crashed last night in the middle of a render. That's not necessarily an uncommon thing though, lol). No other crashes or oddities though with an uptime of over 48 hours now.

"Stability" seems to be a subjective term for everyone. Some people are happy if it runs fine under everyday usage, other people are cool with a few iterations of IBT, others say an hour or two of Prime is good enough, and then there are the hardcore crowd who can't sleep at night if it doesn't pass 24 hours of Prime. I just think Prime can't really be trusted with the 83XX series, as I've heard it isn't reliable with them, so I'm going with the "if the thing runs, it runs" crowd for now biggrin.gif

Thanks man, and yeah it's definitely quieter. At least it was able to take me to max OC for the chip anyway. It's unfortunate that 100 MHz more was all I could squeeze out of this chip. Was hoping the H220 would take it closer to 5 GHz, but alas, it wasn't meant to be on my piece of silicon frown.gif

I'll probably do another build in about 18 months to 2 years, will will definitely go custom loop.

The Vishera club have ditched Prime as I have I. I relied on 12+ hours of Prime to ensure stability and temperature but with the 8350... it requires a ridiculous amount of voltage to become stable. Since everyone else is finding good stability with 20 passes of IBT-AVX on max... I figured I'd give that a shot. It would be great for normal use and BF3 and GW2. But I can't seem to keep out of the BIOS and messing things up, ha.
