That old i7-980X at 4.0GHz still whoops an i7-3770K at 4.8GHz in multi-threaded apps. You can probably increase that to 4.3GHz pretty easily, too, at 1.4V's.

I'd rather keep the money and lose a few fps here and there.

Oh but I wouldn't be able to spot the massive epeen on OCN though. But then again you can't put a price on epeen.

my 80 dollar Z75 mobo likes to say it reached 5ghz no problem.

everything pass 130 is for Xfire/ Sli, enthusiasts socket 2011, or Flashy looks, or super fine tuning

Performance increase as expected from IPC enhancements and no change to clocks.

Those who are holding off on buying SB-E for IB-E/Haswell-E should take note-it will be the same scenario.

Already got someone to buy my 2500k and mobo. I'll have no choice but to upgrade biggrin.gif

I'll probably have to pay ~125 out of pocket depending how nice of a mobo I get and if Microcenter has it.

Otherwise, not too noticeable an improvement. The Integrated Graphics look much nicer (should be good for laptops).

In multithreaded apps yes but gets slaughtered in everything else.

Haswell > Ivy > Sandy > Westmere

3770K has a 45% lead in single threaded over the 980x and only loses by 5.2% in multithreaded in cinebench

It is different when we talk about the "-E" class processor, those have no incentive to improve IGP performance(as they have no mobile parts) and no incentive to reduce Power consumption(TDP have remained at 130W since Bloomfield, even going up to 150W for i7-3970X). Which means the Ivy-E 22nm die shrink could easily lead to 2 more cores & more clocks while staying at the same TDP.

The last time Intel Die-shrinked their 130W Enthusiast Platform:

Bloomfield i7-965 , 45nm, 3.2 Ghz Quad Core 130W, 263 mm^2, LGA1366 $999(Tock)

Gulftown i7-980X , 32nm,3.33Ghz Hexcore 130W, 240 mm^2, LGA 1366 $999(Tick)

This Time:
Sandy Bridge-E , 32nm , i7-3960X 3.4Ghz Hexcore, 435 mm^2, 130W LGA2011 $999(Tock)

Ivy Bridge-E, 22nm, i7-49XXX 130W? LGA 2011(Tick):

See a trend? I see that Intel have plenty of room to add at least two cores to the IB-E die while still reducing die size compared to SB-E, the TDP will likely stay the same while the IB-E chip get a higher stock clock than its SB-E counter parts.

Because Intel's Enthusiast lineup don't care/focus on about IGP performance or power consumption improvement, it is highly likely that Intel add cores again on a Enthusiast level die shrink while also adding clocks, the price & TDP though will likely stay the same.

Sandy e is a native 8 core but intel didn't release it. Ivy e I believe have up to 15 cores and who knows if intel will give us an unlocked 8 core

According to that leak Intel had a IB-EP native 10 core chip and a native 15 core chip. The Native 15 core IB-EP chip is most likely on a separate, larger socket(like LGA1567 was to LGA 1366) and will be a 12/14 core Server parts replacing the Westmere-EP LGA 1567 Xeon E7 10 Core Chips.

The Native 10 core IB-EP will most likely be LGA 2011 compatible, replace E5 SB-EP chips as Deca core Server parts and with 2 core disabled serve as unlocked I7 Octacore.

All that above is my speculation based on this leak by Sweclocker claiming native 15 core IB-EP could exist. They could also not exist and all we get is 10 core server parts and 8 core IB-E i7s.
