Need build help!

Thread Starter
Ok, so I'm going to be doing a build soon, which will be my first! So naturally I'm gonna need some help picking out parts.
Here is what I have so far:

CPU: Intel 3770k, but this is my first question. For gaming and, uhh, value (debatable), the 3770k at the moment is quite obviously king, but with Haswell just around the corner, would I be best to go for this with a flashy z77 mobo, maybe get a 3570k and a lower teir mobo to upgrade when Haswell is released, or just halt completely and postpone for next gen?

Mobo: if I go 3770k, I would probably go with something like a maximus v formula or g1 sniper. If I go 3570k, probably a z77 sabertooth or mpower. But if I wait, then idk, wait and see I guess.

CPU cooler: either h100i or one of the new 280mm coolers.

PSU: an 850w PSU with preferably 80 plus gold. I'm looking at NZXT hale 90 v2 or POSSIBLY corsair if I see one on sale.

Case: I'm stuck haha 😄 looking at cm storm stryker, corsair 650d, corsair 600t white, nzxt phantom 820, switch 810... Decisions, decisions....

HDD: Seagate Barracuda ST2000DM001

SSD: 840 pro, corsair force gt/gs, Kingston hyperx 3k (seen them quite cheap), either one 240/256 gb or two 120/128 gb. Feel free to suggest others.

Memory: 16gb of something haha. Preferably 1866mhz. Looking at either Kingston hyperx beast or corsair vengance. Not willing to pay the near apple-sized premium for the dominator platinum for some fancy lights in the modules or the overclocking ability I'm probably not going to utilize.

Optical drive: dvdrw don't really care

OS: thoughts on windows 8 or 7?

Sound card: either asus xonar Phoebus, or creative sound blaster zxr

And finally, the hardest decision for me, graphics card(s): So, I'll be playing at 5760x1080, triple 1080p monitors. Been looking around and have somehow found myself to become a bit of an nvidia fanboy.... So naturally I'm leaning towards 670/680. My question is, am I better to go with 670 4gb sli for 5760x1080, for extra headroom with the vram, or 680 2gb sli? Or should I just go for one 680 4gb (probably evga 680 classified) for now and add another later? My budget basically just cuts me short of 680 4gb sli, much to my dismay.... If you want to convince me 7970 ghz cfx is the way to go, please try, but I will need some fully solid number haha 😄 I can be stubborn and unreasonable sometimes....

If I was going to go 670 4gb sli, I was thinking asus dc2 or evga. If I was going 680 2gb sli, I was thinking msi lightning (the blue LEDs might clash with a preferably either white or redish main colour scheme though) or an evga variant. If I was going single 680 4gb, I kinda have my heart set on the 680 classified, but another substitute is welcome.... Kinda.... And if you are going to try convince me "7970 OWNS" then I am for some reason favoring the sapphire vapor x, but I haven't done extensive research on the AMD counterparts so help is probably needed on this front.

The pc will be used for gaming, video editing and likely some 3d rendering in the near future. Also, if you have any favourite peripherals like mouse, keyboard, monitor, let me know, but I already have speakers (logitech z506, already love them to bits). Oh and, the 5760x1080 monitors I was considering, were the Asus VG248QE (also found myself to be a bit of an Asus fanboy haha).

Thanks for your time and your help is much appreciated!!!!

Morning,

OK don't bother with the 3770k if you're just gaming, go with the 3570k and save some money.

The sabertooth is an overpriced piece of crap and the MPower is passable. I'd personally go with the gigabyte GA-Z77X-D3H.

850W is miles too much for any machine, unless you're doing Tri-Sli which I seriously doubt get a decent 650w PSU. As for getting a gold rated PSU, a bronze rated PSU will do the job just as well... If you're in the states then look for the rosewill HIVE PSU's, those are epic.

Frankly, I just wouldn't bother with nvidia for a triple screen setup, go with the 7950's and overclock them, they'll make the 660ti and the 670 look like little girls with a dolly. I'll get a link in a second

If you can get hold of it, go and get the samsung 30nm memory, it's the best on the market if you can get your hands on it. If you can't then anything with 1600mhz @ 9-9-9-24 will be enough, you won't see any real world gains on anything faster.

If you are just gaming get the 3570k and pair it with the ud3h from gigabyte.

Put a 7950 AMD and 8GB of ram and call it a day. You dont need 850 if you are using single psu and sli or crossfire. You will need 750max with headroom to OC.
Have fun

I concur with the others when they say get a 3570k. It will suit your needs perfectly.
I have a sabertooth z77 and I like it a lot but it is a bit overpriced.
PSU I recommend the corsair 760i, will be plenty for crossfire.
SSD: Samsung 840 pro or non pro are both great choices.
Video cards: Okay, I understand your leaning towards nVidia, but AMD will be much better for eyefinity. I would go with 2 7950's or 7970s, price to performance is amazing. I have heard that eyefinity is a better experience than nVidia surround.
memory: Corsair or g-skill are both great memory brands.
