If you are trying to get the most for your money and wouldn't mind the size of a stereo receiver, I would look at some used gear.

For around 40 dollars, all off of craigslist. I got a Yamaha natural sound RX-360 stereo receiver, pared up to a set of Yamaha YST-SCII bookself speakers. Along with a Vector research 8" 100W sub for the lows.

In the end I got a great sound set up for my needs, at less then the price of a new game.

Crappy cell phone pics of the gear. Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

The M-audio ones are not far from regular hi-fi speakers to my ears.
The krk are not bad , but for the price there are some other options wich are also good.
Never heard the swan ( didn't even knew they existed)

These ones are also worth a listen.

and also these Yamaha's wich are some of the most used monitors on studios ( don't ask me way, they're not that better from the other ones in this price range)

Are you going to do any acoustic treatment?

If you haven't tough about it you should, even just a minor degree of treatment will improve the reverberation and dispersion of sound in your room,
And since you're getting better speakers, your room is also important for the best "bang for the buck".
