i7 980X + RAM or FX-8350

Thread Starter
So I won a GA-X58A-OC in a tournament kind of thing recently and wondered what I should do now that I have some money to upgrade my rig, mostly just because but also because my dad has a Pentium D and wants my old parts.

I have a brand new GA-X58A-OC, a MSI 990FXA-GD65 and a AM3 Gigabyte UD4P something board.

I have a Phenom II 955 and 4GB 1600MHz CL9 RAM.

Now here's where it gets interesting:

  1. Someone is offering a i7 980X + G. Skill F3-16000CL8-2GBPS PerfectStorm for 300€, which I could use with my LGA1366 brand new board. So buy that and give my dad my stuff.
  2. Try selling GA-X58A-OC for like 120€ and buy a FX-8350 and some RAM and give my dad my stuff with the old AM3 board.

To tell the truth I just play Starcraft 2 and overclock from time to time, but nothing hardcore, not even H2O, even though I can get a free Watercool HK Rev. 3.0 so maybe H2O in the future?

What do?

Any reason for that? is it a bit futureproof¿? Should I try to sell the 1366 board and get a 3570k instead?

980x will be fast for a bit longer than a 8350 will. And that board is the best OC board out for x58, a real gem.

980x will be faster than 8350 will ever be, plus you have the option to install 24GB or 12GB if you want

980x with no doubt at all its a lot of CPU power
post #9 of 101
one more vote for the 980X. I am currently running bigger his brother and i can't see myself replacing this chip for a long time.

Here is a quick comparision of both

980X is the superior CPU by far, higher single thread performance and higher multithreaded performance, win - win.

That and the X58-OC is an awesome board, deserves a good CPU!
