3930k and sapphire toxic 3gb 7970 thinking about adding another for crossfire OC'd

hi guys,
will my PSU (Antec High Current Pro 850W) be enough to power my sig rig plus another 7970 ?

i can get another sapphire toxic cheap and wouldn't mind it, only if my PSU was good enough though.

what you cant see is i have an extra 2x 1TB westi blacks, 6x120mm fans on the rad and an asus D2X sound card

ive just used a PSU calculator and it says id need atleast 775w but without the 7970's being overclocked

thoughts please biggrin.gif

Just looking at what you've mentioned, I'm pretty sure having 2 x 1TB WD black and six fans takes you above 800 watts and that's not good enough.

For your HDs:
1TB WD Black consumes (max read / write) 6.8 watts x 2 = 13.6 watts

For your fans:

watt=current x volt

volt is 12v. current is quoted on the fan itself, typically 0.3 or 0.4a. so

12 x 0.3 = 3.6w and 12 x 0.4 = 4.8w

If we choose the lower wattage fans it would come out to = 3.6w x 6 = 21.6w

If we choose the lower wattage fans it would come out to = 4.8w x 6 = 28.8w

In the end that between 35.2 watts ~42.2 watts added on to 775 watts = 810 watts~ 852.2 watts

The rig would probably run, but don't be surprised that if you repeatedly put enough stress on that PSU it might decide to go kaput and take out some of your nice toys!

Always err on the side of safety my friend! Better to buy a 1000 watt PSU to ensure you have enough headroom! Plus what's the point if you don't OC brother... this is OCN!

Easily plenty, the HCP units beg for a demanding setup anyway. wink.gif
post #4 of 12
The HCP-850 will easily handle that. If you could get your cpu to 5.5GHz and the 7970s to 1350Mhz, the HCP-850 will just smile back!biggrin.gif

I still have my Antec. I used it when I was running two GTX 480s and a 990x, highly overvolted on all three. Had a Corsair AX850 and an Antec SG-850 with the same set up before using the HCP-850, and my computer would just shut down during benching. The HCP-850 never shut down once.

A very beastly unit.thumb.gif

Wow the whole time I was thinking he wanted to go trifire instead of crossfire!

The funniest bit was going, huh why is everyone saying it's fine when he wants 3 cards... then I re-read the title and the OP. FAIL. Lol! thumb.gif

I even had to redo my math - I went 250 watts for 3 cards = 750 plus the original computation I did, more than 800 watts! I must have gone crosseyed for a bit there confusing the 3GB for 3 cards or something! tongue.gif

Haha, the title made me think Tri-fire aswell at first read. I guess it's because of the 3gb 7970s in crossfire part.

You're not alone!tongue.gif

Original Sin is the foremost expert on psus on our forum, so if he says it's good, it's good. I have experience with the unit and with the two very power hungry cards available, GTX 480s. So I know what this beast can do.

So yes, you're good with two 7970s with the HCP-850.
