Can't decide if I should get a 7950 or 7970 at 1440p

Thread Starter
Currently I have a i5-2500k and 6950 but the gpu doesn't seem to cut it when it comes to most modern games at 1440p. I was looking at getting a 7950 but noticed the 7970s are only $90-$100 more. I know the 7950 can be OC'd to 7970 levels but I assume the 7970s can be overclocked just as much pass those levels? Was trying to get opinions to see if the 7970 is worth the extra money at my resolution or should I just get a 7950?

What company of cards does everyone prefer? My current card is a Sapphire so I know how they preform but I was thinking of trying out a Gigabyte this time around since they are the same price but would assume the cooler is just a bit better considering the addition of a third fan.

Open to any and all opinions.

If you can afford it pitch for the 7970. You'll be happier.

Get a Sapphire HD7970. Resale will be better and you know for sure the chip isn't a gimped version of a higher-end model.

Only $100 more?

Personally I didn't think it was worth the small performance increase. But I wanted to go crossfire. So I would of looked at the 7970 if I was going single gpu

I don't think it's worth it for one second, if you have any doubts about value it's not even in the same discussion. The 7950 is just a vastly better buy and the extra 100 can go to something else like a 3TB hdd or something. Like others have said the retail value would be higher though, but I don't think the small increase in performance 5-7% is worth the 33% increase in cost. (ignore the card in sig) tongue.gif

7950 is the better buy only 5% slower than 7970. But if those 5% more performance make the difference (maybe 5fps) go for the 7970.
The gigabyte is a solid card with a very good cooler, sapphires also behave well if you go with asus nake sure is a V2 cause the V1 has some issues with the cooler

Save yourself some money and just grab a sapphire 7950. ~ 100 dollars can be spent else where biggrin.gif. I own a 1440p monitor and a 7950 and the 7950 has not let me down. Though I don't playing anything like BF3 or Crysis 3.

I just played Arma 3 and thing absolutely destroyed my current 6950 lol, so a definite upgrade is needed.

If I do end up going 7950 what does everyone think about the MSI Twin Frozr compared to the Sapphire?

I own both and run them in crossfire and they are both great! I do like the TFIII better though. Seems like it is a lot higher quality. The Sapphire has a plastic shroud and the TFIII has a beautful metal shroud on it that is beautifully crafted. The TFIII also OC'd higher than the Sapphire when running them as single cards, but you will be happy with either one. My vote is for the MSI though. Plus a 3 year warranty thumb.gif
