HDD or MOBO failing!?!? HHHAALLLPPP!!!

So basically I've had my rig for almost 2 years now, and basically have had no problems with it.

Yesterday I turn it on, and BIOS posts fine. Then at the "loading operating system" message it gives me the "Disk read error has occurred .... press cntrl+alt+delete to restart."

I did that and my rig restarted just fine. TODAY, however, it's taking me SEVERAL of these restarts before my rig finally boots up.

Thing is, once it actually boots up, the rig runs perfectly fine.

Is there any way to determine when the problem is originating with my MOBO or my HDD? I'm really hoping it's my HDD, but this seems unlikely as my rig runs fine once it actually boots up.

Just to make sure I've tried LOTS of programs: tried all 25+ games in my STEAM library, all of which work fine. Deleted some games and redownloaded them thru Steam, and the re-downloaded versions all worked fine.

Just now, before I made this post, it took me roughly 5-10 restarts before my rig actually finally loaded Windows 7.

Isn't this just typical of life?

I **** you not, literally TWO DAYS AGO I went and gave my old rig away to a friend who really, REALLY needed a new PC.

I'd like to reiterate that I've had this rig nearly 2 years now, and have **NEVER** had any problems like this.

I reformatted roughly 1 month ago, and fresh installed everything on my rig (first I've done a full format since I got it)

Sounds like a HDD problem. Even if you think it is not back up all your data right now regardless. Losing your data to hardware failure is not worth it when you know there is problems with any part of your rig. Test your HDD with Crystal Disk Mark: http://crystalmark.info/software/CrystalDiskMark/index-e.html Post your results here.

Do you have a USB storage device or memory card plugged into the computer when you are booting?

Have you run a diagnostic on the hard drive?
