Is this Mobo good for OC'ing? Does it support it? - Page 2

Notice there are no cooling elements on the VRMs, I'd be careful with that board.

Small squares below the components with yellow squares are the important ones.

I'd give this a guide a quick glance before making a decision.

For a 4.2 Ghz OC? I don't know if that would be an issue. Depends on the voltages I guess. OP, what voltages are you using as of now? While you are certainly right on the VRM's, I wonder if that is dependent on the voltages he is receiving. If he has a decent chip, he could avoid that. However, a volt hungry chip would want a 6+2 or maybe 8+2 phase power.

Thanks for weighing in. Needed to consider that.

4.2 on a 965 BE is pretty high as it is. With my NH-D14 and mid-range ASUS board I maxed out at 4.2GHz at about 1.45V.

Phenom II OC Club

Those lists obviously do not include every 955/965, but the number of people above 4.2 is fairly low, and the voltages required by those over it are pretty high.

My suggestion would be something like this: ASUS M5A97 R2.0
While it still has the lower power phase, it does have passive cooling on the VRMs.

Or if you decide to go with the board from the op, 4.2+ is pushing it. I'd settle for ~3.6GHz and call it a day. Better to be negligibly slower and not break something in my opinion.

Alright. Thanks, Guys! smile.gif

I'd definitely consider what llxkevinxll said. He probably knows more about the Phenom II series than I do (been years since I had one).

Well an AsRock 970 Extreme 3 can handle it too.

That board has heat sinks on the VRMs as well. so I agree that would also be a good option.

The best budget mobo I found so far is a Biostar TA970XE and Biostar TA990FXE. They have the best 4+1 phase power in the business.
