Changing credits requirements for BGB events - Your input requested

Taking a look at the credit output during BGB27 (graph here, courtesy of Tex1954) shows that almost all of us have no issues meeting the high end of the current credits requirements.

Given that the number of GPU projects has increased since the last time I believe we had this discussion, combined with the advancement of hardware, it's time to decide upon some new requirements. Below is the current requirements for our standard BGB events:

Prize value $0-$24.99: at least 1,000 credits
$25-$49.99: at least 5,000 credits
$50-$99.99: at least 20,000 credits
$100-$200: at least 50,000 credits
$200+: at least 125,000 credits
(also, the requirement of having NOT accepted a prize given out for last month's BOINCers Gone Bonkers event applies)

Going ahead, we should be looking at making it competitive while still making it welcoming to new members.

What do you guys think that we should change the credits requirements to?

Just thinking out loud here:

Prize value $0-$24.99: at least 5.000 credits
$25-$49.99: at least 25,000 credits
$50-$99.99: at least 75,000 credits
$100-$200: at least 200,000 credits
$200+: at least 500,000 credits
(also, the requirement of having NOT accepted a prize given out for last month's BOINCers Gone Bonkers event applies)

Primaboinca gives 200 credits per work unit, which takes roughly about an hour to finish. On a quad core processor, that's 800 credits/hour, which makes it easy to earn 5,000 while you sleep during the night.

The main issue with making the credits competitive is the GPUs. I think it's fair to assume that almost everyone on OCN has a card that can crunch most of the GPU work units without any issues. Some stuff like GPUGrid may take longer on older/slower cards, but for those users, the mini_collatz units for Collatz Conjecture can satisfy their needs.

Plus, it's very rare that we get prizes that are valued into the $200+ range, so those should be given a high requirement when they come around.

I think thats right on the credits. Even if you ran FightMalaria youd make enough to get atleast the $100-200.

I would add that a $200 plus prize requires some kind of previous participation for OCN... like at least 2 BGB's in last 3 or regular OCN BOINC'er for last 3 months and made a minimum of points for us in those months... something...

I'll leave it to the experts to qualify tip-top prizes a little better..

That's another thing to consider, thanks for bringing it up Tex!

For BGB23, the 10 billion credits celebration, we had the following for the special prizes (graphics cards & ducky keyboard donated by admin) *SPECIAL PRIZES* : At least 25 million total credits in your BOINC history AND 250,000 credits in BGB23 AND competed in at least 5 BOINCers Gone Bonkers events prior to this event.

What are your guys thoughts on something for like that for $200+ prizes?

I like the combined pts and the 250k requirement but 5 bgb could suck. Although this coming BGB will be my 5th Im just thinking of the lack of $200 prizes we actually get but it might take 5 months for us to accumulate such a large item so maybe it would be ok.

Actually, it worked fine for that special BGB!

And I am one to always like what works... sounds good to me!

This "IS" OCN after all... OVERCLOCKERS LIVE HERE! LOL! IF one can't make the points, they ain't overclocking enough...

LOL!

I think those credit requirements will work out perfectly with all the different high points projects that everyone can do now.

The total credit requirement and the BGB credit minimum would be fine, maybe kick it up to 450,000, but the 5 BGBs prior was a bit much. I think 3 prior BGBs would work a bit better.

Yep, I have done 3 bgbs but I don't feel deserving of a $200+ prize
Would be cool also to have a requirement to have donated a prize already
