Changing credits requirements for BGB events - Your input requested - Page 5

@ PR, I actually agree with the elimination of prize tiers for lower level prizes, say anything below 75-100$. After that point we would still be dealing with the same issues. I also completely understand not always being able to run full tilt. Once I move out of these apts where my electric is included in rent, I will have to really cut back on BOINC. Just trying to do as much as possible while I can. smile.gif

OT: Really wish POEM would go back to being consistent, I would gladly trade the ppd to run one of my fav projects again. As it stands its just too much of a hassle trying to ensure both systems are fed with WUs. I need something that I can run for 24+ hrs without needing to babysit...

As far as referrals go: I have actively gone into threads and made on topic comments and at the end of my posts tried to promote/recruit for BGB events. It seems like most people ignore the suggestion to BOINC, even for a few short days. Honestly, its a bit disheartening mad.gif

In short: I don't envy Gamer. wink.gif

See, but having the top prize as a reward for referral points might possibly get more people actively recruiting and spreading word about the boinc, we've had pretty great success with it for the Foldathons. Sometimes we even have people referred who fold for OCN 24/7 who may have setup the client and never visited the forum again or just don't know about the FATs or any of the other events we have (this is me with boinc, if it wasn't for the monthly reminder I'd probably forget all about the BGBs)

The difficulty of recruiting was brought up in this months FAT where a member posed the top prize (a OCN Ducky keyboard) be moved to the main prize pool. Every response to it was, it's not that difficult and doesn't take much effort; a quick invite in a thread or PM to anyone you may have been helpful to is a possible new signup. It might be a bit disheartening but what's the worse that can happen?

One thing I would like to see the folding team adopt from boinc tho is the "not having accepted a prize"; quite often do we get repeat winners in the draw.

I agree with raising the prize level requirements, and I think the levels outlined by Gamer are good.

However I am not so convinced about the required prior BGBs. The whole idea is to get more people on our team, and by restricting the prizes to only established members you remove a large incentive for people to join up.

I agree with the "special" prizes requiring a certain prior commitment, and I really liked how things worked for the 10 billion BGB, however I don't think we should restrict the standard prizes that are below $200.

Another alternative, which may or may not be workable, would be to allow the donator of the prize to decide the additional requirements. This would not help with the OCN prizes of course, unless Admin has any thoughts on them.

Well, lemmy jump in here before I go back on the road for a while...

Depending on ones "stance", equally good options and requirements seem good... but we have to remember a couple things. I've thrashed this for at least a year now too..

1) This "IS" OCN... OVERCLOCK DOT NET. We are power users and overclockers and watercoolers and everything cutting edge and fast. It is expected (though never required) that folks come here because we all share the OCN premise and atmosphere.

2) BGB is a selfish and flagrant means to get MORE points for our team because we like to go faster, further, sooner, better than others. We want new folks here too to add to our presence in the BOINC world.

3) PRIZES attract new blood and old alike. BUT, we certainly don't want to give drop-ins the cream of the crop unless they crunch for us on a regular basis.

4) There really is nothing free in this world... neither here at OCN where we all pay our electric bills one way or another.

Beginner crunches should see a clear path to higher prizes no matter how fast their boxes are. Winning a new GPU or something could help the dedicated but lower production level participants increase their output!!! Likewise, higher output participants and members have already spent THOUSANDS of $$$$$ on their stuff and should be rewarded when possible.

So, clearly, the top prizes need a longevity (@ OCN) criteria. I don't care about the points so much as the fact they been helping us continuously for a longer period... say six months.

Also there clearly needs to be a point minimum because we don't want to give a new GPU to someone who runs a spare laptop for OCN and nothing else.

It's like a boat race isn't it? If you enter the America's Cup with a row boat and sheet for a sail, at least you entered, but no way you can win first place! But, kudo's for trying! LOL!

This is OCN, you need to make at least as many points as one lower lever GPU can make... if you don't have a 4850 or GTX520 or something, you can enter, but no way you will obtain top honors..

So that's my input. 6 months crunching and a minimum average of points per month equal to what a lower level GPU can do. IF you ain't got a GPU, then enjoy the lower level prizes and you may win some of them, but never the top prizes. IF you can only run once in a while due to bills and such, fine... just do enough to match what a lower level GPU can do (TBD later).

So $100 and lower prizes the same as they were... Above that, strict -but not unobtainable- requirements.

biggrin.gif

PS: This only in regards to BGB and such, not general participation. This BGB and things starting to get popular like auto racing. And like racing of all types, there are classes and tiers to try to satisfy everybody... and we need to be like those raciing organizations. And, the longevity thing could be 3 months, but I would say that is a minimum...

So your stance Tex, says if I only put out 8k points a month but attract 5 people to join the team, my efforts are meaningless?

We do share a similar view however, length of time and/or effort in actually growing the team should be the basis for the higher value prizes.
Attract 5 people to the team for a BGB, or really entice 5 people to become long-term BOINCers? One is somewhat beneficial but not that great for long term, especially if they don't stay. The other is hard to gauge unless you want to wait greater than 6 months for prize eligibility. wink.gif

Every time I plug the BGB in a thread, I feel like I am spamming... BGBs shouldnt make me feel dirty. Well, Not really dirty, but a bit awkward. I wonder how other members view my flagrant promotions of the BOINC team???

Thread Starter
Getting new members is a big challenge that we have. Even with the homepage carousel promotion and it saying over $700 in prizes to be won, we still fail at getting many new people for each BGB.

Looking at the Foldathons, they give away prizes for referring members to the monthly events.

We could try out something similar? Say, have the lanyard given out to the member who refers the most members? (A lot of people have their eye on it even though there's a $100 paypal prize every month now)

NO!! You simply won't be in the running for TOP prizes... $100 and up... and that includes ME... But it ain't decided yet is it? Maybe the top is $150 or $101 or whatever... just throwing my views out there...

But yes, if all you can make is 8K a month and that can be done off a laptop, then you are trying to sail a rowboat in the America's Cup race or trying to drive a modified STOCK car at the Indy 500...
