Windows 8 - Frustrated

Hey guys,

I will try to be as descriptive as possible here and make it easy to understand my problem. Hopefully I can get some insight.

1) I bought a new HP Laptop from Bestbuy that came Pre-Loaded with Windows 8. I told the guy I was going to swap out the HDD for my SSD and he said that wouldn't be a problem.

2) When I got home I loaded the laptop up and used the HP Tool to create a system image. I assumed that I could use this to reinstall windows on the SSD but apparently after asking HP this only works when using the HDD included with the Laptop.

3) So after a few hours trying to figure it out I decided that I needed some sort of installation software for Windows 8 to do a clean install which I didn't have. So I ordered a copy of Windows 8 64 bit OEM from Newegg and hoped that would help.

4) After putting in the Windows 8 disk and running the start up I get the following error every time during the step before you would normally enter a product key:

A required CD/DVD drive device driver is missing. If you have a driver floppy disk, CD, DVD, or USB flash drive, please insert it now.

Note: If the Windows installation media is in the CD/DVD drive, you can safely remove it for this step

I asked HP about this and they don't have any idea what would cause this.

5) After hours more frustration I plugged the SSD into my main computer and tried to install Windows 8. It worked perfect and didn't even bring up that device driver screen. Once I finished installing Windows 8 I put the SSD back into the laptop hoping it would work but I get the message "Please install an operating system on your hard drive"

6) I really don't know what to do here... I have tried everything.

-Mike

Hmm have you tried getting the iso of windows 8 and downloading this tool (I know it says windows 7 but it can be used with any iso)

And then running the start up fixer tool in the windows installation thingy. If that doesn't work than just reinstall using the USB.
Small wonder.

There is only one hard drive slot so I can't swap it mid installation like that.

I have also tried putting all the drivers from the site on a USB stick but it doesn't load them.I also copied the disk to a USB stick and tried to boot off that. Same problem.

@ KuuFA

Not sure how that tool works since I just have the Windows 8 disk here. I don't have any ISOs downloaded.

What I am trying now is installing Windows 7 64 bit since i know it works properly. Then I am going to try and "upgrade" with the disk from the Windows 7 desktop. Not sure if it will work but I am trying everything I can think of.

If Windows 8 is already giving me this much trouble can't wait to use it...

Alright.

Well really annoying that I had to do this but Installing Windows 7 64 Bit then using the disk to Upgrade from that worked.

Thanks for the input and suggestions

A required CD/DVD drive device driver is missing. If you have a driver floppy disk, CD, DVD, or USB flash drive, please insert it now.

In my experience this error mostly occur when the install media is broken (something wrong with installation files on USB or DVD) or your optical drive can not read the install disk for some reason.

Please install an operating system on your hard drive

This means that the partition on which you installed windows (SSD one) on your other pc is not marked as active, this is why your laptop can not find OS.

BTW any iso which is same edition as the one preloaded on your laptop will install just fine. License for it is located in SLIC part of your laptops BIOS so it will sucessfully activate. The only requirement is that the whidows you install is the same edition. Of course you wull have to redownload drivers for it from HP support site because they will not autoinstall like in the preloaded version.

disable secure boot in the BIOS?

If you clone the factory drive to the SSD with Acronis True Image or the SSD mfg site will have a download of their version of clone software. Then switch out drives and boot, it works perfectly! Have done this with both Win 7 and Win 8 without problems.
