BOINCers Gone Bonkers 28: BOINC Billionaires Celebration - April 2nd - 4th, 2013 - Page 19

Thread Starter
In the early days, signups would have been accepted after the event started and those that joined in late would complain about not being on the stats sheet, so to stop that from happening, I decided to close sign-ups once the event starts. BGB's are now always run during the first week of the month and you can usually signup up to 2 weeks in advance, so there's almost no reason why you would 'forget' or miss that.

Not true. We just have a minimum credit requirement for certain prize. A person that earns 10 million credits has the same chance as a person that earns 1 million credits during the BGB to win a prize.

My sig rig can be considered a mid-range rig, probably $800 (replacing the Silverstone case, and PSU with cheaper stuff) and can easily earn enough credits for the high end prizes if run for the entire BGB. The HD6870 could easily be found for ~$100 used.

The prizes are to encourage people to contribute - more contribution, better prizes.

In terms of the hardware requirements, my lowly 5850 can put out ~350k per day on Moo! Wrapper, and up to 480-500k per day on Donate. 500k in two days isn't all that hard.

People don't want to have to actually dedicate their hardware to win a prize. 2 hrs a day should be enough to win a 300$ GPU. rolleyes.gif

Im pretty sure that most people who have 800-2000$ rigs are not gaming 24/7. I usually have my systems crunching 24/7. Doesn't prevent me from using office or browsing the web ect. So short of the electrical costs, I really don't understand peoples reluctance to crunch on their systems. By extension I also do not understand the hang up with the prize requirements. Most members of the team, most members of OCN for that matter could hit the max prize bracket in less than 24 hrs.

credit amount isnt that bad, i realize now smile.gif

800$ mid rig.. ive prob spent 800$ on hardware in the last two years.. not saying that much tho, as my sig rig appart from the case cost me less than 300$ lol..

true, but I really dont see the point to do other projects just to make needed points to possibly win a prize smile.gif and gpu for wcg isnt cheap..

best GPU ive ever owned is a 9800gx2 lol..

in the last 2 days ive done 10,188 thats two rigs crunching for 48 hours.

obviously when i get my 16core up that will double but.. still 20,000 points.. am I doing the math wrong on points? 24 cores running 24/7 doesnt even get a prize that worth time of switching teams.

but,
its okay, im not arguing, nice event and im glad it works for you guys:)

The stated Goal of the BGB event is to generate as much credit as possible. You can run lower ppd projects the rest of the month.

well... for 1... i dont have the most money i just have sold all my old hardware and upgraded to what i have now. you can ask anyone here about me, i have been one of the most dedicated if not the most dedicated members on this team since it was founded years ago. Its nice to win prizes but its not why i Boinc, and its for damn sure not why i love being a part if this forum. running the BGB's is a bonus, i run all my systems 24/7 anyways, so if i never won anything.... wouldnt bother me a bit.

for 2... No the BGB isnt just for the prizes, and its somewhat about the points. BGB events are first and foremost about OCN Boinc awareness. Some people who visit OCN never have heard of Boinc, as well as some Boinc but never knew OCN had a Boinc Team. The events the OCN Boinc team have are the only thing as of now that is advertised on the carosel on the main page, so its our only source of advertisement. Sometimes getting people to dedicate their hardware for a minute for a cause is hard enough, but to run it for hours a day? Some people would ask well what do i get if i do this? Hence the prizes. One is more apt to join in a event if they have a chance of winning something. It doesnt take the greatest hardware to put up the minimum requirements, which is why we decided to do the tiered prize levels. So someone who doesnt boinc at all, cant come in run for 2 days and win a 300 computer part, when it could go to someone who is a dedicated member and isnt just here 2 days a month to win a prize.

-Also, why do you care how things are ran on our team if you're not willing to be a part of it?

i think its funny that the people who make the "most" points (also called, have the most amount of fun money to spend on hardware, get the most chance at the best free stuff.

I've burned my fair share of GPU's as well, has never stopped me. Plus, a GPU failure isn't as risky as a MB failure, which can take out the CPU, RAM and even other devices with it.

While i agree that a darned good card for BOINC does cost a pretty penny, you don't need to buy it to get decent points. You could get the required 500k off a used GTX 460 or GTX 470, while costing under $100. There are other AMD cards which are good bang for buck from the 4000 and 5000 series, but i don't know prices for them. So it's not like only the "top spenders" get to get the top prizes.

No, the prizes are to entice people who do not BOINC, not to attract people from other teams. You can do it if you want though. If only i wasn't so lazy, i'd Fold for EVGA, those EVGA Bucks are something indeed. Alas, i'm just too lazy to keep track of which account i'm signed in biggrin.gif

Well, CPU projects are the weak link of BOINC. No CPU project will give you the amount of points as a GPU, much like a 4P rig won't give as much PPD as a single GPU for Folding.

Science > "free" crap
Perfectly fine to only do it for the prizes but thats not what the event is about.

I think a simple note saying if you signed up after the event started you will be included in the final stats but during the event your name will not show up on the list would be better than saying no you cant join us.

Input is fine as is questioning the rules. Continuing to complain about this not being able to join this BGB is not IMO. Most of the long time BOINCers were not happy during the 5B celebration (or 10B, I don't recall) when all sorts of hardware was donated by OCN, only to be snatched up by Folders who were never to be seen again. THAT is why we have and want "dedication" requirements.
