[RealNews] Mutual Interest Hidden Beneath Apple and Samsung Legal Struggle

Patent law is frequently understood as a mechanism to safeguard the rewards for innovation. But companies who employ batteries of lawyers and spend hundreds of millions of dollars on patenting every possible aspect of their products are not rewarding innovation but doing the exact opposite. They are putting up bulwarks against competition.

If a company would attempt to design a gadget to compete with existing smartphones, it will need to go over a quarter of a million patents in order to make sure that it will not be sued for patent infringement. If it somehow overcomes this obstacle and designs an entirely new product, it might not even be recognizable as a phone, and the company will have to spend millions in advertisements to educate the public that their gadget can indeed be useful.

Finally, something posted that does not 100% love Samsung. I am getting tired of the Apple Hate and the Samsung Love. Both companies are just as bad for using patents to block out other companies from making phones. This kinda leaves Samsung and Apple with a large control over the Android and iOS markets respectively. (I know iOS is only Apple but you get my point right?) It will be soon that Android will be acknowledged as a great OS by a large majority and when it does, I do not want Samsung in control of it since they will be just like apple.

EDIT: I do not like Samsung because they have used patent law to lock out many Android phone manufacturers. Remember when there used to be dozens of high end Androids? Now there are like 3 and only Samsung has the SD card slot (I bet they patented that too). Android's greatest strength, IMO, is the diversity of hardware. If Samsung has its way, only those Galaxy Phones would be on the market for Android (I'm not too fond of the aesthetics, Sorry)

Iono man, I figured manufacturers stopped putting sd cards because they were seeing how profitable it was to make non upgradeable phones (memory capacity). Apple was making insane profit margins on their 16, 32, and 64gb models thanks to the "premium". Basically, everyone got greedy.

That was a joke. Sorry for the misunderstanding. The loss of an SD card slot can be seen as a good thing for Android because it prevents fragmentation or Bottlenecking because of the SD card read and write speeds.

Whatever happened to ZTE, Huawei, or Pantech?

I agree with your original sentiment but I dont think patent trolling is what's helped Samsung take hold of the high end Android market.

I'm not saying that Samsung sues companies. I am saying that their constant legal battle and their large patent portfolio is a deterrent .

EDIT: Here is Samsung v LG over a screen: http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2412293,00.asp

No sd slots have nothing to do with samsung.
It's because of multiple reasons.
Cloud storage (carriers want you to use it, and burn up that data so they can make you pay more and stupid crap)
Google said that apparently, multiple storage points are confusing users.

and there are a few other reasons why. Making phones with no removable battery means that the sd slot would have to be exposed. and by not having one they can make the phones slimmer.

It's really stupid. I remember when EVERY phone had an sd slot (because internal storage was at a premium)

but now that internal storage is becoming so cheap, manufactures are opting to kill the sd slot in favor of internal storage.

I'm glad samsung is opting to keep both internal and external.

I just wish that more phones would be like that because I am getting weary of Samsung's GSIII look. Its too round XD.

They get sued for rectangle with rounded corners so they make an oval with flat sides XD

lol as long as the note 3 is a better version of the note 2 i might want it. I agree the GS3 is a bit round. Especially next to the note 2. They squared out the note 2 a bit compared to the gs3

Whatever happened to ZTE, Huawei, or Pantech?

Uh. You must be a bit confused. Androids greatest weakness is the diversity of hardware, you have devices made so cheaply they end up at their EOL when they launch, you have feature phones like the evo 3D that are flagship phones (at the time) stop being supported soon after release, and then custom roms with newer versions of android cant support the 3d cameras.
The diversification is why android is so fragmented.
If samsung had its way, it wouldnt run android. Theres a reason they are developing their own OS. They want more control, they want their own app store to replace the play store. Lets face it, they want to be more like apple so they can branch off and be the smartphone company.

As for ZTE, Huawei, pantech and all the other lesser brands. They cant compete, they didnt evolve in the fast smartphone market like samsung, lg, htc, and sony have. They are 'unknown' names, with the exception for being accused of potentially spying on the US. They still develop and launch phones in the US, but more often overseas. There are companies like oppo which have real potential if they keep working on their phones to branch out into the US.
