Can you overclock laptops? Or am I just a noob.

Thread Starter
I have Asus 15.6in k55a-r500a model with intel core i5-3210m, 2.5GHz and 4GB RAM. I was advised to increase the ram but for this thread I was curious to the ability of laptops to overclock.

Thank you OCN community

Well, no. They're locked multiplier and FSB-wise, so that's not possible. Some processors can be overclocked through 3rd party apps, like Llano mobile APU's.
Pretty much all Intel Mobile CPU's are locked down hard since the Intel Dual-Core mobile age.
They could be overclocked through some software editing of the OEM motherboard. However, that was only for specific MB's. I cant remember what that method was called, old and forgotten tech by now.

EDIT: I remember now. SetFSB could be used to overclock those CPU's. I don't know if that software is still relevant though. You need a specific clock generator for your specific board to OC your processor through FSB.

I have never owned a Asus laptop before but there could be a glimmer of hope if anything. I own a HP laptop Pavilion DV7 7000 quad edition and I tried a lot of 3rd party programs to overclock anything. Alas nothing. The 8gb of ram I bougght from newegg 1866 runs at 11-- something.

It runs pretty darn hot so overclocking anything on a laptop risk overheating. If I can enlarge the CPU heatsink into a plate I bet I can easily fry an egg on it.

even if you had a laptop with unlocked multiplier or FSB (some of the high end gaming ones have it) the cooling on laptops hardly keeps it cool at stock, let alone overclocked speeds.

Software overclocking possible (i.e. using SetFSB life software) but not recommended at all.
