GPU for £250-£300 - Page 2

Dont bother going for the 7950 if your having the skyrim mods issues. I also have a crazy amount of mods on my brother 7970 and it handles it just about maxed out ( we could overclock the card but its not mine lol ). I would go for the 7970 and overclock it, at the moment the price is good because you get some games with it OR buy the graphics card and ill buy the games off you tongue.gif

I have like 15GB worth of mods between :\

On doing a side by side comparison with my current GPU, the 7970 standard and 7970 GHz Ed. I'm quite surprised to see my current GPU holding its own in regards to the core and memory clock.

I've also just read the 7970 uses a whole 100 watts more of power and can be quite noisy.

yes but at resolutions of more than 1080, the narrow 128-bit bandwidth would choke your card and you would feel the lag in gameplay which you would not see with the AMD cards. Moreover, the GTX 600 series are voltage locked (without modded bios) compared to the AMD counterparts. Hence, you would be more future proof if you go with AMD

I'm just going to ruin most arguements here with people going for the Nvidia cards

http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/618?vs=598

There ya go, decent benchmarks, ignore all the blabbing about "Oh it's only got 128bit memory bus" blah blah blah, It's the damn architecture that the card uses, it's designed for that. It's still excellent, but the 7950 is cheaper.

so are you saying that the GTX 660/670 would perform equally well at resolutions above 1080p compared to the HD 7870/7950 ??
If we take metro 2033 for example, the GTX670 and the HD 7970 GHZ edition perform equally well, Between the likes of the 7950 and the 670 they would perform roughly about the same at 1080p.

So, yes, give or take.

http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/550?vs=598

There ya go, crysis warhead at 2500x1080, exactly the same, then you have a number of other benchmarks at 1080p and the 670 outperforms the 7950... Again, the difference is the price.

I said it before and will try again.

Think about SLi. Unless part of the budget is due from selling the current card throwing another 660ti in there is going to be the most horsepower you will get for around £250 (you can even get reference Palits for under £215).

If you are using a lot of high res texture packs then it's very possible you are hitting vram limitation on a 2gb card. If this is the case then the 3gb ram on the 7950 or 7970 will serve you better and sli wouldn't help.

On the Skyrim forums someone also said the same about it being a VRAM issue.

I also read that I'm best of getting a standard 7970 as it can be turned into a GHZ Edition with a simple BIOS flash??
