So basically to prevent this prices in second-world countries will be raised to match first-world country pricing. Sucks for the second worlders. doh.gif

I really valued the profs who didn't use big name textbooks but created their own material out of articles and gave them out for free (the university bookstores are just as much for packages the professors create).

It's the biggest sham after proprietary software.

You go to Ryerson too? Sweet.

I am also curious if this is going to have any effect on software in the near future. The Supreme Court saying that an item must be able to be resold is a pretty strong precedence.

University textbooks are the greatest sham money maker taking advantage of already poor students. At my University as well as others in Toronto they change the textbook every semester/year with only the cover being changed, chapters are the exact same while the problems range from being placed on a different page number or at best using different numbers/ names in the problem; its despicable. One person was using a photocopied textbook in a binder, the prof took it from her yelled and belittled her in front of everyone in the class then destroyed it right in front of her. You can bet as soon as class was done everyone urged her to file a complaint.

Which school is that?

Look at from this point of view:

Info in these areas take a really special type of person to write and collect in a presentable manner -- SO much time and work goes into writing, and publishing research... I have seen it first hand. Much of it undervalued and similar to an unsung hero of academics.

More importantly, it keeps the VALUE of a degree higher. Opportunity cost being factored and money paid out nets a higher cost to ATTAIN a degree. Therefore, it present a barrier to those unable to fend for a $250 x classes. Its as a university professor put it: I had to do it. The person before me had to do it, it NOT equal or fair if the next person does not. It's a good thing in a cutthroat world where the market is flooded with degrees, as I believe that a university degree is privilege and should be seen as such.

Academics is a strange creature, one pays to be in a life of servitude. In a way, it teaches humility and power of the mind.

Edit: Freshman lvl book cover change -chapter rearrange, so we can call it a new edition to charge $$$ is WRONG.

Books shouldn't determine the value of my degree. The idea of college is something that has been forced into our heads since our youth and it's often said you won't get anywhere in life without one, yet you have to obscene prices for book along with tuition that all but increases yearly? I don't want to make this into an argument or anything, but I don't agree with your point at all, especially areas like the UK where college is paid for. When I told my cousin we have to pay upfront to go to college he gave me the blankest stare ever.

You know...this always online DRM that no body likes...and some people totally despise...would be the perfect tool to allow refunds on software.

If I have to log into a server to use some software why can't I get a refund, or even resell the game, and have my access to the server blocked? Because I may have cracked it? If I was going to do that I would never had bought it in the first place. No one would ever mess around buying a game to crack it and get a refund of it. They would just download a cracked version. The original crackers of the game would not want to be known by the publisher in anyway and they would get their money back and far more from adds on their websites...so I am sure they would not mess around with a refund either. So it would be only genuine paying customers that would use it. Put a time limit on it...if you logged into the server for more than an hour...no refund. I am sure no stores would give me my money back on a toy my kids played with for an hour either...but they would if it was a few minutes and the item was still in resellable condition (note the refund could happen the next day or even the next week...just don't be using the item during that time)

Give the customer something...and they will come back...and likely even be willing to pay more for items if they know a refund is possible if they aren't happy with it.

No. Different publishers. Books that are published by McGrawhill in the US are published by someone else overseas (I think?). The publishers overseas won't be affected by this change.

Not necessarily books but just overall net cost.

The old UK vs US college argument, etc is just silly. Go live in the UK, get a citizenship+other reqs if you want college paid for and stay there. Its all about regional degrees and both are world class western degrees. I think USA degrees and subsequent costs are a reflection of a capitalistic society, likewise a government paid for degree is reflection of the UK society.
