Problems with Intel SRT

Thread Starter
Well, after over a year of inactivity, I turn to the Overclock.net forums for help...again.

I just built a brand new PC for a client. Respectable computer...i5 3570k, 2x8GB 1600, and a cheap AsRock Z77 motherboard. 500GB WD Blue with a 64GB AData SSD for caching.

Anyway, I got everything done, and went to enable Intel SRT. Problems there...eventually I remembered that I had to enable RAID in BIOS. Did that, booted back to Windows, then SRT shows that both drives are 0GB in size. What? Tried reinstalling the SRT suite and driver, everything was good. Enabled caching, then gave the customer his keys to his computer.

Here's where the real problems start. The customer calls me this morning saying that his computer isn't working, something about a black screen and it just stays there. Well, *****. I go to his house this afternoon to try and fix it...oh boy. Nothing. Absolutely nothing I try works.

The computer keeps saying to put a valid boot disc in (so obviously trying to tell me to put a boot CD in). I suspect something went horribly wrong with the Intel SRT, so I do a quick google-fu exercise in hopes of finding a solution. Finding a similar problem, I fool around with the Intel RAID settings (the ctrl-I menu), disabled acceleration (the "RAID" array) in hopes that it would see a valid boot drive. No go. Go into BIOS, change the boot order around, and still nothing. I explicitly ensure that I'm trying to boot from the WD drive, since that's what I originally installed 7 Pro x64 on. I try everything related to storage settings. Disable RAID and go to AHCI, even to IDE. Nope. Nada. Still tries to boot from a CD (which obviously isn't in there, giving me the error "insert disc"). It's almost like there's no data on either drive, which is making me nervous.

So I put in the Windows 7 install disc to try to maybe get it to repair the install, or at worst do a fresh install. The keyboard and mouse aren't recognized at all. The laser light doesn't come on, and the keyboard's numlock doesn't light up when I press it. I know they work because they're both working correctly in the UEFI BIOS. At this point, my client says he has to leave the house, so I get kicked out. I'm completely stumped.

What am I supposed to do here? I really don't want to look bad in front of my client. The computer is BRAND new. Clean OEM install of Windows 7 Pro 64bit, and the only programs installed are what was on the motherboard driver disc and Microsoft Office 2013 Home & Business. By the way, if I end up having to nuke and pave, will the keys on both the OEM Win7 and Office 2013 work? They're both legitimate, but they've obviously been activated in this build.

HELP!

Maybe the boot sector actually installed on the Adata SSD instead of the WD. If you try booting from the SSD and it boots that's the problem. I ran into a similar problem when I introduced a new SSD to my system. It acted weird with all the issues but once I booted from the drive I did not install the OS to all was good. Of course at this point I was able to repair the boot sector on the OS drive and boot from it correctly.

I apologize that this may seem like a long shot but when I read through your thread it's the first thing that came to mind. I remember being very frustrated because I also saw empty drives, drives I have a lot of data on...

Thanks, I'll try to rewrite the MBR tomorrow. Don't really know what's going to happen since I disengaged the RAID array, but we'll figure it out. I'll let you know what happens.

Nope, that didn't work. Set active partition and fixed the MBR, and tried booting from both disks. I finally got the keyboard and mouse to recognize inside the Windows boot disk, and tried running the repair tool. No active installation found. I also tried using the command prompt to use all options in bootrec.exe and it keeps giving an error of "resource not found" or something to that effect. However, exploring the hard drive in both the basic explorer inside the Win7 boot disk and a small Linux distro shows that the drive actually still seems to contain everything on a typical Windows installation. BootRec actually seems to detect the installation, but still throws an error when trying to /fixboot and /rebuildbcd.

What else can I do here? Obviously I could still start all over, but I'd much prefer to keep all data. Also, how could I prevent this from happening again? This is really turning out to be a nightmare.

Did you check both disks for the OS installation? It's odd it says no active installation but it let you repair. I am at a loss as well...Maybe rebuilding is the best bet. Considering the time put into it and the time you may still need to put into it just to get it up and running versus rebuilding...

Also I don't think one can always prevent something so strange as this. I build many PC's in a week and I can build two identical Dell's with identical software etc and they could turn out slightly different...

Yah, starting to think rebuilding is for the best. Will the keys that I purchased, and already activated, for this computer still work? (office 2013 and 7 pro OEM)

Sure, I have never had any issues with reuse on the same PC. But if you do just contact MS's automated system, it is quick and will get you up and running in a jiffy!

Good Luck

Your welcome, amazing how a little overlooked item can cause so much grief. I rarely think to look at cables as the source of an odd issue.
