Need some help (suggestions) for eyefinity-3 monitors at 1900x1080 resolution

Hello guys I have been doing a lot of research on the topic at hand but I still don't have all the answers I need. Will 2 radeon 6970s be able to handle 3 monitors? If not will a 3rd card do the trick? Iam also curious as to what cables I will need to buy as well I have a Asus 23.6 inch monitor and plan to buy 2 more of the same kind they have hdmi, and dvi hookups....What other cables will I need to purchase? How much will all this cost me and is it all worth it I guess? To me it would be but we all value things in a different way so feel free to give me your opinion.Iam getting my 2nd radeon 6970 sometime this week so afterwards I can focus on getting 2 more monitors then the cables I need.I mostly play flight sims like fsx flight simulator x,wings of pray, but also games like metro 2033, splinter cell conviction, aliens vs predator, battlefield 3...will all these games support 3 monitors? As a side note I plan also to upgrade my current cpu and motherboard to a intel 3570k with some type of motherboard that supports 3 gpus, please feel free to give me suggestions on that as well.I don't think my current cpu can handle running 3 monitors so ive put a budget in for new cpu and mobo as well:thumb:

two 6970s should be decent for eyefinity with 3 1080p screens, provided the primary card has the necessary outputs. I run eyefinity off my 7970s and most newer games will work with it fine. thumb.gif

You will need an active adapter if your monitors dont have a display port input if you go to 3 displays or more.

I used to have 2x6970s and it worked ok at 1080p, but there was considerable microstutter in some games. I dumped my 5670x1080 Crossfired 6970 setup for a 27" 120hz 2560x1440p w/ 7970 and made the right choice.

No fisheye effect, no weird incompatibilities that needed 3rd party tools to fix, etc.

Battlefield 3 runs ok i remember, just had to turn off HBAO and any AA - and it would be around 50fps.

If i were in your shoes, id simply and sell the 6970 and use the money you were going to use on either a 1440p display (hopefully 120hz) and a 7970 or a 144hz 1ms 3D monitor with an Nvidia card for lightboost hack.

Fisheye was distracting, and the novelty kinda wears off - at least it did for me

Yeah that sounds cool and all the 3d-monitor but I really wanna give the eyefinity a shot. The 3d monitors still cost and arm and a leg besides even if I did manage 1 monitor then id probably just wanna go out and buy 2 more lol.I just need 1 active adapter? do u know how much they cost?

Around $30 for a Display Port -> Single Link DVI active adapter. Give or take a few bucks. The Display Port -> Dual Link active adapter is pricier at $100 or so , which you wont need unless you go over 1920x1200.

Just a heads up that if xplane is your flight sim of choice then it won't make any use of your second card.

Having recently ditched my eyefinity setup (2x 7970s with 3x asus 23.9" 1080p screens) I'd say don't bother and I'd suggest selling your 6970 and buying a single 7970 instead of going down the X-fire route. A single graphics card will always best 2 at equivalent power due to poor scalability. On average you might get 50% real benefit from 100% increase in cost and power and you get to contend with the joys of microstuttering and waiting for ati to release driver updates or application profiles to make the games work. When you throw in 3x screens you'll be looking at running your games at much lower settings than you currently do.

For 3x screens, I was't satisfied with the performance of 2x 7970s, I seriously thought about buying a 3rd gpu but in the end bought a single 1440p screen, selling the 1080p's instead and its a much better solution in my opinion.

I hear where you're coming from and its certainly cool for a while and flight sims are the perfect reason to go tripple head (it was the main reason I wanted to play around with eyefinity) but half the time the games don't work properly e.g menus off screen, view port inverted (thanks XCOM!) or hud elements in annoying places and then the drop in performance in almost any game from the last 4 years.

However sometimes the itch just got to be scratched!

Yes 2 6970's will run 3 screens

You will need an active dp adapter

Not sure about your processor, personally I would try and see if your cards are bottlenecked before spending the extra cash.

I love eyefinity, some games don't work on 3 screens but most do.
