Will a CPU's Temperature Stop Coolant From Freezing?

Hello everyone!

Can you keep coolant from freezing with the CPU temperature?

Ok, let me explain some. First off, I live in Minnesota, it gets a little cold up here, but nothing too bad.

Secondly, I have a Server rack in my garage that I hope to put a game server in. I currently have a couple air cooled server blades in there. I also have come across some water cooling equipment, and it would be awesome to put that in my game server.

I am curious that if I do water cool it, what is the danger of the coolant freezing?

I hope winter will be over soon, cause in the summer I wont need to worry about it. Though, in the winter Minnesota has gotten down to temperatures as low as -20 F. I will add that my garage is normally 10 F above what it is outside.

What do you guys think? Do you think I could pull it off? Do you think I should overclock the CPU in the Winter to keep that fluid warm? And if Distilled Water runs the risk of freezing, are there concentrates that lower the freezing point of the water (that are obviously safe for PC watercooling)?

Thanks very much!

I think it would depend on the loop, flow and reservoir. Especially if it is well below freezing. You could always add some anti freeze though?

If you keep it on 24/7 it shouldn't freeze, but if it's already that cold pretty much any air cooling should handle the load. I'd save the water cooling parts for something else.

Yeah, The server will be running 24/7. So, keeping it warm hopefully wont be an issue.
Though, our summers also get pretty hot up here too, which is why I took a look at watercooling for the server. Because the Temps range from 70 F to even 110 F in the summer.
Though, would watercooling help too much in the summer to keep the CPU cool? Or would it do the same job as air?

For sure it will keep it cooler than air. It will able to dissipate the heat much more efficiently

I think I will try to water cool it. If I know a cold night would be coming, I will just have to be sure to try overclocking it a bit or bumping up the voltage to keep the CPU warmer, hoping to warm the water.

Thanks!

Is your PC outside or something?

Just because air is 32F doesn't mean water is. For your coolant temperature to be 32F you'd have to have the computer off while the ambient temperature is under 32F.

Can't see that scenario happening unless I'm missing something.

He said it's in the garage.

i would be more worried about condensation than the coolant freezing.

My garage isn't insulated and as long as I keep the garage door closed it stays about 20F warmer than outside.

I can see it being a problem 1 or 2 nights a year IF the computer is off (he said it was a 24/7 server) but unless it's a lot colder up there than I'm assuming, I don't think he'll ever run into an issue with coolant freezing.
