If you want to make sure that you didn't install any extra stand-offs, then you may be able to take the other side panel off and check the back of the motherboard tray to see if you can spot where each stand-off is screwed in. Then you can see if each one matches up with each of the holes on your motherboard and you can also spot if you have any extras. You could even spot if you have any screwed into the wrong holes.
I would also recommend checking to see if there is a screw inserted into each hole in the motherboard. If any hole is missing a screw, then that could be a sign that a stand-off is screwed into a wrong hole.
So the idea I guess is to make sure that this is all good. If you feel that you're unsure, then the next thing to do is what Qwan456 recommended: take the motherboard out and try to power it on while the motherboard is sitting on the cardboard box that the motherboard came in. If it came in an anti-static bag, then do not place it on top of it because only the inside of anti-static bags have the anti-static property. It would be no different than placing it on top of a giant Ziploc bag or something like that.
