Kickstarter - Picsu, PC controlled 12V PSU.

via Kickstarter - http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1531311296/picsu-the-power-supply-that-fits-in-your-computer

Quote:
Picsu Features:

Single channel output
Voltage output range 1-12V, precision to 50mV.
Max current output = 2 Amps
User friendly serial port communication.
Adjustable output current limit
Short-circuit protection on output.
Quote:
You will notice that the Picsu has no display screen for things you would normally see on a power supply, such as voltage or current. This helps to keep the costs down for the supply. It also makes it very convenient to have all of the operating information right in front of you on your computer screen.

The Picsu is powered by your computer's internal power supply. All that is required is an available SATA power cable. This means that there are no power cables crowding up your workspace. The design has built-in short circuit protection, so your computer's power supply will continue to operate even if the outputs are shorted together.

While very cool... I could already do this, interfacing a PIC via USB, and using an ADC pin to adjust the PWM controller duty cycle according to an USB-set value... redface.gif

It needs some work, but it's nothing the average educated electronics junkie couldn't do with a few hours in MPLAB, Eagle and Microsoft Studio...

..Fans? Obviously this is a bit over the top but fan controllers are just a much less advanced version of the same concept.

Throw a few of these in the one bay, and you've got a fan controller you can control on your PC at 50mV amounts.

I can think of a lot of uses off the top of my head, but then again, I'm an electronics freak biggrin.gif

But still I don't think it justifies having a PSU on my PC. I'd rather have it standalone.

As for the display. That's being just plain lazy, now that I read it.

Since he's interfacing it from Serial, he might as well throw in a 4-digit 7 segment display and some decoder logic... When buying in bulk, the displays cost €2.50, and the decoder ICs are at less than 1€ for the 4 drivers...

And it's not like he's space constrained, he's got pleeenty of space left in there to throw in some more logic that would make that PSU look much more awesome than just two screw terminals and a serial connector.

Agreed. There's nothing extraordinary here.

I'm just wondering why the serial port is external facing? If it's going to be mounted inside a pc, then why not have the serial port internal facing? It would make a lot more sense that way.

Yea, this was a good idea when VisionTek did it 3 years ago: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=5681047 Had they improved upon it that is.thumb.gif

Granted theirs was for a GPU, but still.

This is very cool! My wife has been talking about getting a power supply for studying her electronics courses at home better, and I think this would be perfect. I hope it reaches its funding goal.
