Windows 8 Anyone?

I've been debating whether or not to upgrade to W8. W7 has been a rock, so I've been a little reluctant, but W8 won't cost me anything (except time rolleyes.gif ). Who's using it and what's your experience been so far?

Thanks smile.gif

I am! I love it a lot. Not a fan of metro, don't take advantage of it, but I love the faster boot time. My SSD could only do so much, but with windows 8 on top of that SSD - no more than 8 seconds from POWER BUTTON to lock screen, not even post! Windows 8 also has built in optimizations for SSDs, which helps a lot.

I also like to take advantage of charm and multitasking bars, really help speed up productivity and searching for files. I lied, I actually do use metro to quickly check my emails and calendar, the live tiles are great and the built in apps work well for me (although I've not switched to gcal with the new android phone).

Are there any other features that stand out? Not really, unless I've already become so used to them, I can't think of anything else. But those few features were enough for me, if you can get it for free jump on that! I got the pro version (what $130 now?) for $70 because of a slight exploit with the upgrade disk and their consumer preview biggrin.gif

Thanks. I still get all my MS software for "free". I've been looking at my copy of Visual Studio Ultimate 2012 and thinking about installing it. The old developer in me still gets excited about that stuff, but the other side says . "Nah..." rolleyes.gif It would probably all look pretty alien by now... redface.gif

Still, W8 could be interesting smile.gif

I use it, and its a solid little os. I actually quite like Metro, as I despise any shortcuts on my desktop. I also like the right click menu on the start button, it basically has every system utility I use frequently. The search function is a bit annoying, as it breaks down the results rather than showing all of them at once, but its a minor nuisance. Also, multi monitor support is improved.

I use it primarily on my main rig at home. I don't notice anything special about it. I imported the explorer.exe from windows 7 and got rid of metro and the task bar that was on each monitor. So far it has even updated a few times with no troubles so I think it will be viable, but with the type of software I use I kind of have to have the start menu...or at least thing sorted into folders. The default Windows 8 way is when software is installed it makes an icon for every clickable thing the used to appear on the start menu. For some software that is a good 50 icons. Try installing three or four software suites like that and it gets messy fast. You can make your own folders and sort them of course but it is a pain and you might not even know how you want to sort some of the little used tools. For launching known software I just hit the windows key and type the first three letters of it...just like I do on Windows 7, but it is all the stuff you barely use that causes the problem. I also don't have access to the app store any more, but I am not missing it. I truly do not believe there is anything good on there.

but metro would be fine if all you use is maybe 20 applications or less. All it is really is a start menu that got exploded across the screen. However if you get rid of it you are left with Windows 7 for the most part.

My biggest annoyance is probably the lack of gadgets. I used tons of gadgets on Windows 7. I am making do with Rain Maker on Windows 8, but it just doesn't work as well. There is something called the 8GadgetPack that brings them back, but it is not very stable.

Another annoyance is logging off, shutting down, or restarting. In windows 7 it is tap the windows key, hit the left arrow key, and hit enter (to use the default option, if not then arrow key up or down and hit enter). In windows 8 you have to mouse over to the upper or lower left corner for a second and let this setting side bar appear and then select an icon and then choose what action you want to do. Does it take long? ...no, but just more involved...I guess I am more of a keyboard user than a mouse user.

There are some security enhancements behind the scenes I guess...though I never was getting attacked on Windows 7 anyway. So I don't see them being very valuable for the average PC. If you forget your password it is setup that Microsoft can email it to you (each log on is setup as an email if you are not on a domain). At least I believe so...I've never tried it. Supposedly it starts up faster, but the difference from 7 to 8 on a SSD is not noticeable. I got my copy free through the MSDN membership...I don't think I would ever pay for it though. There is just not much of a benefit. And even the people that like Metro would never pay $80-$140 for an application that added that to Windows 7.

Hated it at first. Uninstalled it. Then gave it another try.

installed Classic Shell for my own mental comfort and to keep Metro from launching at start up.
Learned the shortcuts and.....

Now I like Win8 better than Win7!!!

I dont own it...but I have been known to spend alot of time at CostCo and Best Buy to play with new tech and so I have tried out windows 8 alot recently. I have to say, I really liked it. Only reason I did not get it with that early upgrade was because of the fact that I do not have a touch screen and I thought the touchscreen made it much easier to use than a mouse.

Other than that it seems to be a really solid system and I think the main reason it gets so much "hating" is because it is so different from what we are used to and the whole thing with Steam saying they dont like it cause Microsoft is trying to be a little more controling....which I dont think will last.

Yeah it was much better on a touch screen...then the start screen made sense. I had a surface for a while from my boss...but I gave it back as I was never going to use it over a laptop anyway. However, I'd never want a touch screen monitor on a desktop. Any time a finger comes near my monitors it gets slapped...people who start to point at it with a pen run the risk of a punch to the neck. I need them clean...and touch screens are hard to keep clean.

I´m using it in my main rig, and is realy good, starts much faster than the previous OS, all my programs that I used in w7 still working without problems.

I like the start screen, and with a good organization, you can access to your programs faster than W7. I you want to create an custom access to some app o folder from the start screen you can do it with OblyTitle

I don't have a touch screen, and I have using it perfectly with a mouse and keyboard, you may need to accustom to hot corners, I don't have any problems with that, well it depends of each person.

I upgraded to Win 8 3 weeks ago, but installed Classic Shell because I do not want the "Tablet" features of Metro and prefer the Win 7 style.
So far so good.
