What does 1 million PPD look like?

Greetings fellow OCN'ers and folders,

I have been tweaking the clocks, voltages, and airflow on my system to net the maximum PPD for F@H. My GTX 480 now comfortably cranks out about 22-27k PPD depending on the day and type of WU's. I also have an i5-2400 that does about 10k PPD. So I'm comfortably churning out about 35,000 points per day.

Anyways, I wonder about how OCN could get out of 3rd place. We're almost 10 million points behind EVGA and [H]. Also, they're just about tripling us in PPD.

So.... with my measly 35,000 PPD, I don't see myself making a dent in this deficit. However I'd like to, and if we turn things up a bit.... devil.gif

What does a million PPD look like? What is the cheapest configuration available to get there? It's sure as heck not going to be 40 GTX 480's.... Is a bunch of 4P rigs the only way to get anywhere close to that efficiently?

Your thoughts? How can we get, say, three or four users to 1 million points per day?

I'm not expert in that field but from what I've seen the most cost-efficient rigs are the 4p Opteron's, with 6174s and SuperMicro board.

It would be massive.

I don't think you can cram 1 million ppd into one box.
Well unless the QRB units return big time, then a bunch of GTX 690 may do the trick.

EDIT:

BTW. Grandpa_01 from [H] is approaching 3 million PPD and has +10 rigs running to achieve that number.

You would need either 4P running AMD Opteron 6380 chips or 4P Intel running E5-4650 chips... those are the cheapest single rig solutions and probably the easiest to manage for 1 mil. ppd = $3k-$4k.... Another route would be 2x 4P AMD 6100 series rigs but that would probably be the same price, if not more than the above solution.

that is the cheapest...

 

You could run 10-20x gpus but by the time you add the cost of the CPUs, motherboards, PSUs, etc to run all those GPUs, it will be cheaper to just go with my original suggestion.

GTX690= 86K ppd for $750 used

GTX460= 20K ppd for $100 used

3930k bigadv= 100k ppd for $700 used, bare essentials to run like motherboard, memory, gpu, psu

4P 6128's= 300k ppd for $1.2k used

 

^^^All rough estimates but pretty close IIRC

 

Hopefully the above helps you understand that a 4P/2P is the cheapest route.

Well, I wasn't clear on the GPU route being "cheapest" and worded my post in a single rig direction, making the single rig impression understandable as a single 1 million PPD rig would be massive.

Basically load up a cheap motherboard and CPU with as many high cuda core GPU's as possible. (Is my guess)

The power draw will be insane, but who cares.

4p with some 660's in the pci-e slots see a board the other day that had 3 pcie slots that at least 2 are usable

Any preference between Magny-Cours and Interlagos? Or Sandy Bridge?
