Two chips in...two to go!

Oh, and by the way, 25% of the 4650 is in...quadruplets!

If it was the 4P boards only I would not be frustrated, but all relevant server boards seem to cost a lot in the EU.
I can get a 771 board cheap now and then, but anything better than that seems to be rather expensive, located in the US or on the other side of the equator.

just the board is £700 / $1050 you can buy 2 used cars for that. and the chips are $100's. i know its for folding and i love doing it but that's a lot of money

Nobody said this was a cheap hobby! Even I'm realizing that now that I'm diving deeper.

I poured over $15k into my $36k Mitsubishi Evo VIII only to sell it for $17k (the parts went for $5k). I think that even a year or two later, the devaluation my computers won't be that bad. Percentage-wise, I think I'll still come out ahead with my folding machines if I decide to sell them.

As far as costs go...I spent about $200/ea for my four 6176's, $809 for the mobo, $63 for each of the four heatsinks, $450 for the memory, and $225 for the PSU. I haven't even factored in a case yet (SM cases ~$1000 and a Mountain Mod case is ~$475 for a SWTX mobo version).

My four E5-4650's were $500 each, and I still have to identify a mobo and case...though I'll probably fork out the ~$2.3k for the SM SYS-8027R-7RFT+ (2U) mobo/chassis combination (I need the height for my SAN HBA's). In this case, and probably in the case of the 4P AMD system above, I'll use these for dual purpose--folding and virtualization.

I guess that what it boils down to is that you've got to spend big to play big (high PPD).

I know that there are people out there that have spent more than I have...I'm not alone!

Picked up a few 580 Frozr IIIs the other day from a guy that spends north of $10k year on benching, OC'ing, etc.

At least my venture is for a good cause!

In fact, a friend mentioned to me the other day that I should register a non-profit organization, donate my folding machines to it, and then I could write off the electricity they use. I may have to look into this.

I have thought about whether or not I could write off the electricity use on my taxes (if i can donate clothing to GoodWill, why can't I deduct my electricity as a donation). Just buy a few "kill-a-watts" and meter the electricity for each folding machine and presto, money back in my pocket.

Anyone know if anyone else has approached/tested this idea?

Otherwise I may have to start bitcoin mining...
