[Hexus] Next Xbox will be “Always On, Always Connected” - Page 12

Kinect is required, it has to always be online, and it can't play used games.
I think it's safe to say I won't be purchasing this, not now, not ever.

If the PS4 isn't a success not only will console gaming take a jump off a cliff but games as a whole will decline rapidly..... as if the gaming industry isn't stagnant enough as it is. thumbsdownsmileyanim.gif

Good thing I already decided I'm done with consoles. The only console I frequently play on, is my NES, that's it.

I recall that thread about the latest Sim City, and how they stated people were "love the Always On" functionality.

I couldn't help but laugh.

I wonder if they realize that's not yellow lemonade they're drinking either when they come up with these grand delusions!!

PC's are always connected to get updates.... Whats the problem...

Hmmm. I am all up for Always online, I do not think that in itself is the issue. What is the issue is if they use this online only plan to enforce certain elements of the new console, such as DRM Enforcement and removing many elements from the console interface when you are not online which basically renders the unit useless upon an internet outage. I hope they have an ''Offline'' mode for times when a connection is not possible, otherwise that is restrictive and kind of renders the whole point of a dedicated gaming machine as fairly pointless. There comes a point when you cross the line between ''Games Console'' and ''Media Server''. You expect a Media Server to require a constant connection as that is the role of the device. A Games Console is a Gaming Device and should be that first and foremost. When you remove or sway from that purpose then you detract from the whole product purpose.

If you MUST have an internet connection to fully utilize a GAMES CONSOLE, then it has swayed away from its purpose.

The problem isn't about updates, it's about being able to use your purchased product if you don't have the supporting Internet connection. I'm a little annoyed that I can't play certain games offline if I'm traveling on a plane or by car for an extended period of time.

Where in this article does it state that you cannot use the Xbox 360 offline?

The only stated requirement is Kinect.

Living in an area where I do not have access to reliable internet or one of any decent speed, I cannot and will not every support "Always On." There are far too many people in the same position as me that it is not reasonable to expect customers to be "Always On" with internet. When I lived in the states and had my 20mb line, yes it didn't bother me but now that I have seen what many people in the world still have for internet I can sympathize. I am paying almost 40gbp a month for .8m down ADSL and it is most certainly not reliable or stable. Also it is my only choice for internet where I am.

I can't play SC2 because just to get into queue it takes 20min+ to download the maps. I can barely play LoL.

Will not buy if true. All my hope is in Sony.

Speculation is a solid word for all this, like the "speculation" about the PS4 and its capabilities or hinderances.

Xbox 360 can already operate in a low-power state whilst still downloading HD content and I don't see that changing with Durango which is even more flexible thanks its eight lower power x86 cores.

Furthermore, there is no reason to force an always online function for updates when developers can(and have) shipped updates on the retail discs that are mandatory...rolleyes.gif

Agreed, the way this is worded could mean anything.
