[Hexus] Next Xbox will be “Always On, Always Connected” - Page 9

i will say 1 more time, its on Sony and MS,s DREAM list of things they would LOVE to do such as block used games and allways be online BUT, they know trying to do it will not be accepted so they can the idea, the same 2 rumors were running around the 360&ps3 biggrin.gif

So sad to see where the gaming world is headed. Between Steam, EA, Ubisoft it is getting much harder to find games able to be played without interwebz. I really don't like it.

If I have a console which its only purpose is to game, I want to be able to do so, irrelevant of ISPs. Once upon a time in a world far far better I could go to Grandmas house and just plug in my console to the power outlet and BOOM!, I was gaming in 10 seconds flat. Alas the glory days are over.

I just recently lost internet connection for 6 days. I went from having 20 Mb/s to 0 for almost a full week (time warners fault). This has crystallized the issue with me. I was trying to find something to play out of all my games and it was beyond difficult. Out of 30 games I think I had access to ~7 (damn steam). None of them were the games I had been playing. No PoE, No D3, No Farcry 3, No Kingdoms of Amalur.... NO FUN

I'm sure eventually someone will jailbreak this. It'll suck for a while, but even the PS3 got jailbroken after 4 years. If both Xbox720 and PS4 requires always on I'll wait until they are jailbroken before getting either.

They'd likely also prioritize certain things, stuff that's required for everything in the game (eg. Some textures, some vox/music, the first few maps) gets downloaded first with the additional stuff downloading in the order you'd play it.

I wish Steam had that feature, I think WoW does and I know War Thunder does.

If you can afford a $200-$400 gaming console, that's about a year of Comcast service @ $19.99 promotions (which are easily obtainable for first time subscribers).

94% of America has access to broadband Internet, and the percentage is probably even higher now. Sure, some of the remaining 6% may own a gaming console and might want the next gen console, but I'm willing to bet there are more people that don't own one than people that do (within those 6%). Worldwide access to broadband may be a much lower percentage for obvious reasons. It's a business move and a rather intelligent one in my opinion. They'll lose thousands, even millions of sales to those that oppose it or can't have Internet, but they'll regain just as much and more by doing away with used game purchases alone; add to that the anti-piracy clause and maybe even barring rentals (your only option to play a game will be to buy it new). I'm sure Gamestop are defecating bricks right now.

Lets just say I do have a great broadband connection.

What about Microsoft? If their end comes down, doesn't matter if I'm running 1Gbit/s Fibre or Satellite, it's still going to be down. Always online connections are unacceptable, especially if it means you get kicked out of the game...The current Xbox 360 is bad enough at that, and I say that as someone with decent internet:

If anything I can see a one time online verify type thing then you can just enable offline mode like Steam and Origin has. Which is not a problem for anyone as long as you don't have to actually install the game via internet.

This. If it is eventually confirmed I can see the PS4 winning this generation however, unless MS spends more than enough on the servers to ensure they don't go down which being fair, they have been fairly good at.

Now if it is a required connection to function, even with basic things, there is the problem.

This.

You'd have to be incredibly naive to think this wouldn't be used against you as a consumer.

If this requires a connection for simple functioning, this is going to be a big problem. But i'm sure the masses will overlook it to get a few hours on some rehash title.
