Ah, ok. Definitely not meant for gaming. It's (to be fair I don't sell these, so someone else should clarify) likely designed to just centralize and share hardware. With something like this, you could get the GPU power to those that need it on demand instead of relying on each individual machine's Quadro (which would likely spend a large percentage of time at idle).

CG/CAD workstations can cost a company upwards of $4-5000 for basic configurations from Dell / HP etc, some from smaller companies like Boxx that offer "factory" overclocked CPUs etc, can be in the 5 figures each decked out. And yes, often users need more. It is not for adding a few fps to justify your surround 120Hz gaming setup, it is for computing crazy sh@t on that screen in seconds instead of minutes, or minutes instead of hours.

A $5000 gaming system is overkill for most, but getting such a workstation for a user that gets paid $40-50/hour to be more productive makes sense. It pays for itself pretty fast. Many people around the world listen to those hourly rates and go crazy, but unfortunately that's what seasoned artists get here, with the really good ones making much more. Outside those studios, people drool over expensive hardware, and wonder who and why would pay for such monsters.

These remote computing machines are the future for companies. Instead of getting those $5000 machines, they will be getting cheaper workstations that will have access to something that on-demand can super-size their potential.
Just like we have network distributed rendering/computing, render farms etc now, soon we will be able to have all our compute power centralized with little or no penalties. It will bleed into consumer applications too...

Already there are programs offering real time rendering demonstrations on tablets, that pretty much stream and can alter the camera viewport to a remote workstation running 3D Studio max and computing lighting/materials with GPU rendering engines.

Imagine your laptop and eventually tablet being able to "play" any PC game - technically just "streaming" the visual content and uploading control inputs while everything gets computed in your house's gaming server, which also handles both of your kids' gaming at the same time (yeah, it will take some time, especially if it is wireless).

I believe it was during one of the TED Talks that an engineer was laughing, and serious at the same time, that we would eventually go back to the "Terminal" days of the computer world......

(For those that might not remember or know what that is)

The first 'powerful' computers took up entire floors of buildings, and you didn't directly access them, like we have today with the PC. Instead you used a Terminal, which was nothing more than a keyboard and monitor. You sent commands/requests to the actual computer, and it returned the results to your Terminal. The first systems had just one Terminal, and then future systems had a few.

So, here we are some decades later, having moved from this system and put the power in the users home/office, to now going back to this sort of system. Where users will just be using terminals, all the "leg work" will be by hardware that is out of sight, and can handle multiple users at one time.

Reminds me of a build I did years and years ago.....

The customer didn't want to see ANYTHING but his keyboard, mouse, display, and he didn't want to hear anything either, and wanted to be completely wireless if possible. I ended up installing all of his components in a cooled mechanical closet, and taking the video out from his desktop, converting it into an NTSC "broadcast", and then picking it back up down the hall at his monitor, which had an adapter on the back to pick it up. I installed high gain directional antennas for his wireless keyboard and mouse, to make the short trip. He had speakers built into the walls for audio, and he was off and running.

Ridiculously expensive to do, especially for the time, but he had the money and didn't want the clutter. Also, he said it reminded him of his days using Terminals. biggrin.gif

Funny how it seems we will go back to a terminal and "mainframe" computing environment in the near future. My first job involved ripping out a Sun Microsystems mainframe and a couple hundred dummy terminals at my high school during the summer of my sophomore year, I remember I had to get a workers permit =]. We also switched the entire campus of almost 4k students and staff from a 10baseT network to Cat5 and setting up a couple bonded T1s and a T3 for voice and data.

Seems like we are going back to a similar environment albeit with drastically improved performance and features.
