Considering a 7970; not sure how to cool it.

Thread Starter
So I put my 6870 under water over a year ago and it remains to be a pretty boss setup for what it is.

However, I'm getting the itch to upgrade again and I just can't bring myself to run a new video card on air again. At least not for very long.

That said, I'm looking at the 7970 GHz editions and most likely a new water block -- assuming a compatible one even exists for these boards.

I am aware that the Swiftech generic gpu block I currently have probably won't play nice with a 7970. So that lands me in the realm of the full cover blocks, which means, buy once -- buy wisely. I'm looking at a couple of options.

Gigabyte:

XFX:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150632

Or the Craaazy Sapphire 6GB board:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814202005

The only restriction I have on vendors is not EK. I've dealt with their nickel products and just will not use them again.

Hex.

I'd go for a heatkiller GPU-X3 79x0 it works with all reference 7950 and 7970 cards but it won't work with that 6GB board unfortunately. I highly doubt there are any bloacks available for that board.

the heatkiller has a decent flow rate and looks real smexy to boot. They are really heavy though which I guess means it's built well smile.gif

I did read a full cover block review a while back but I can't seem to find it but I was looking at getting a heatkiller and I was glad to see that performance and flowrate was almost as good as EK's which I think was the best.

Most of the Ghz edn cards do not use a reference PCB so full cover blocks are not an option. None of the cards you linked to are reference, and will not fit a full cover water block

The compatability list for the EK 7970 block will tell you which cards use a ref PCB and will fit any ref water block by AC, Heatkiller, Koolance etc.

http://www.coolingconfigurator.com/waterblock/3831109856697

Edit: Beware of revisions to cards though, many cards that were originally ref boards are no longer. EG, the Gigabyte 7970OC is now a version 2 card and is no longer reference.

Well, it looks like I can buy a 'generic' gpu only waterblock from Swiftech.

http://www.swiftech.com/mcw82vgawaterblock.aspx

What I don't know is how much of a heat monster the rest of the boards are. I'm not big on clocking ram, and will most likely only OC the gpu at whatever the stock voltage is. I have plenty of heat dumping capacity, so whatever I watercool is going to stay at a very reasonable temperature.

So, I could do ramsinks and something on the MOSFETs I can get to. Not sure if that plus air blowing around the card will do the job. I have a roomy case and have a fan pointed in the direction of my 6870.

Any insight on how hot the rest of the board gets? It's also looking like 7970 reference boards are getting harder to come by. I'd probably select the Gigabyte card out of the three listed. I have not been terribly impressed by XFX and I only run one monitor, so I don't think the extra 3GB of ram on the Sapphire board will buy me all that much.

I know EK is pretty popular around here, and I bought their generic gpu block a while back. However the corrosion issues were unacceptable, so I just won't buy any more of their stuff until they readily offer copper base blocks or get their proverbial act together. The reference card list might be handy though.

Hex.

I use the XFX Double D Ghz Edition 7970 and a Swiftech Komodo full cover waterblock. Works.

Diamond 7970 is the only "true" reference board out there if you can find them. I know that Microcenter sells them. Here is a link of the report about diff version of the reference boards.

http://www.ekwb.com/news/133/19/ Hope this helps... Good Luck.

Update: Purchased one of the Diamond 7970 boards at Microcenter and got the bonus games too. Pretty cool that. The stock cooler is a real clunker, and I have downclocked the gpu and bumped the fan to 50% just to keep the gpu temp below 70degC. tongue.gif

FrozenCPU finally is offering the copper Heatkiller block again -- although apparently it's on order -- So I picked up one of those, a backplate, and some thermal pads. I have lots of other spare bits lying around so I can reuse barbs and clamps. I'll likely use this as the point when I do a full teardown, flush, and cleaning because it has been a bit over a year. Lots of plastic hose crud on the hose walls, so that will need to get cleaned out.

Hex.
