RE: use the 95 watt mobo or 140 watt mobo?

Thread Starter
im using the 140 watt mobo with a x2 555 processor and governing my speed i got ddr2 @ 667 6gb+ i got the timings good. my cpu runs at 3.8ghz. i got excellent cooling. video card is great. i can't unlock cores.

i use the computer for gaming.

so i want to buy ram.

i got a 95 watt am3 mobo laying around. the board unlocks cores. it takes ddr3.

if your me. do you want to just get the 1066 ddr2 and bump ghz of cpu.

or use the 95 watt mobo.? will i be able to make the cpu mhz high?

matt

thank you

What board is the 95w link a pic to it like newegg to give a discription
post #3 of 6
The Phenom 555 BE is an 80W cpu when locked. Unlocked it will be 125W B55 (basically a 955 if all 4 cores are unlocked). So even if the 95W motherboard does unlock it which is unlikedly you can't really use the motherboard with any piece of mind. Cause it might go POP. If I were you I would take advantage of the low sale prices on the last of the Phenom line and pick up a 965 BE, 960T or 1055T and use the ddr2 motherboard for now. Best to save money and buy some current parts.

Edit: Could always invest money in a decent low end AM3+ motherboard like 970A-UD3 with some good DDR3 ram and use your 555BE until you can upgrade to Vishera or Bulldozer or whatever. Kinda what I did last year. Kept my 955 until this year and bought an 8350.

with your AM2+ motherboard did you try unlocking each extra core separately to see if it is
just one core that is bad? if you have ddr3 for the AM3 board you can test you cpu on it.
trying to unlock one core at a time. x3 will the 95W. also TDP is max. if you just want to see
if your processor can unlock it won't be any problem.

if you have a nice AM2+ board getting a newer x4 or x6 could be a solid upgrade. DDR2-800 4-4-4-12 vs DDR2-1066
at 5-5-5-15 doesn't make a big difference in gaming. you have to saturate the memory bus. easy for a synthetic benchmark
program to do. but doesn't do much for gaming.

if you can fill out your profile with your system components it would help.

can you run you DDR2-667 at 800MHz ?

I rebuilt the computer this weekend on the am2.

its a ka780g motherboard. i don't got the slightest clue how to unlock cores with it.

funny i thought of it maybe a person can unlock the processor cores in another pc, and then put processor in ka780g motherboard. do you know if that will work?rolleyes.gif

ddr2 runs at 730, and 745 if I'm pushing it.thumb.gif

ddr2 1066 is money. i didn't check ddr2 800 pricing, yet.

i play older games like counter strike source that arent demanding on the computer. do games like battlefield 3 and the new crysis want 4 core+? or do people get by with 2 cores right now.

You can have somebody else test your cpu to see if the locked cores are locked for a reason
(defective...bad or wasn't up to factory spec as in needing more volts than they should). some
x2 deneb just have faulty 3rd or 4th cores. but awesome from AMD to let us try to get free cores.

DDR2 prices are high now that they aren't making it anymore. sometimes you can get it on sale.
I just recently bough a DDR3 motherboard because the cost of two DDR2-1066 4GB (2x 2GB) was
more than an new motherboard. DDR2-800 is a good spot for AM2. DDR2-800 has some nice
gains over DDR2-667. When comparing DDR2-800 cas 4 vs DDR2-1066 cas 5 most of the gains
are in synthetic memory benchmarks. doesn't make much difference in games.

Your DDR2 @ 730 should be fine.

The newer games you mentioned are well muli-threaded and do use the extra cores (Up to 8 cores
if I remember correctly) Crysis 3 and BF3. Lots of pc games still use old DX9 engines (like source
and UT3 engine that have been patched over the last 10 years) don't really use more than 2 cores.
Designed for the Core 2 Duo. Blizzard is notorious for this. Things might change when consoles
programmers get familiar with the next generation consoles (both Sony and Microsoft upcoming
consoles use AMD 8 core APUs). Currently video game programmers are lazy and it cost less for
the company to produce games on old engines.

x2 should play lots of games fine but new FPS mulitplayer games like BF3 and Crysis 3 won't.
If you have an nice AM2+ board you could get a cheap 1045T or 1055T when they go for sale on
tiger direct (high 80s) and overclock the crap out of it. My AM2+ motherboard with a 95W 1045T
at 4.0GHz runs BF3 and Crysis 3 well.

fill out your system specs in your profile. makes it easier to give you opinions about your rig.
