Using external display only, 2012 macbook pro

Hello Mac users of OCN,

I recently got and external display for my macbook pro, and I would like to use only this display while playing games (to alleviate the stress of another desktop from the GPU). I haven't found a good solution, heres what i've tried:

-simply closing the lid, this works, but the temps go up a bit too much for my liking
-the sleep, wake method (doesn't work)
-a few terminal commands that didnt do anything

Any help is appreciated,
Thanks!

Goes against most rational computer thought, but you can use a magnet to trick the MacBook into thinking the lid is closed to keep it off.

I tried that but I ony really have a weak fridge magnet and I don't think it was strong enough. Do you have any personal experience with this? How strong does the magnet need to be

I have tried it with a Buckyball and with a 1/2" neodymium disc magnet. Both were strong enough to turn off the display before they even touched the surface of the laptop. However I wouldn't use the buckyball because it rolls off easily, and I fear my neodymium magnet might be too strong for long-term use. I would want something just barely strong enough.

Personally, I would just try to configure for closing of the lid. I am not sure that I would play with magnets around my computer. smile.gif

Is this an older Macbook Pro? If it is, the were hot to begin with and was just the name of the game. I am thinking of the '06 to early 2008 boxy ones. The newer ones should be better and probably doesn't matter whether you have the display open or not.
