Yeah 560 in SLI beats single 7950, but I can't find a cheap 560 anywhere to make it worthwhile. Thanks Karlitos for that spreadsheet.
post #13 of 126
The 7950 and 670 are great cards. If your mobo supports sli you could keep the 560 and use it for a physx card. Metro supports phsyX. It is painless to set up if you have an Nvidia card as your primary gpu, but there are hacks to make it work with an AMD primary gpu.
Cheers

AMD's latest drivers addressed the frame latency issue to a great degree, and because of that, have brought me back to my main desktop. A good custom dual fan 7950 is no louder than your average GPU (my "old" Sapphire 7950 OCs are only "loud" past 70% fan speed), the one linked above should be tolerable.

Yeah, I'm on board with a single, 28nm GPU like a 7950 or 660 Ti. Are you gaming at 1080p? The 660 Ti competes on more even ground here with 256 bit+ cards like the 670/680 or 7950/7970.

I was in the same boat with my old Phenom II X6, only with a 1GB GTX 560, went to two and did not enjoy the extra power consumption and SLI issues (some micro stutter, worse performance in a few games); compute (BOINC) was great, however (twice the performance for twice the electric bill, rolleyes.gif).

I went straight to a HD 7950 (then two once I got enough courage to buy a 2560x1440 Shimian) and was perfectly happy. Still have Crossfire issues, but don't need the second card 80% of the time.

If you are sticking to a single monitor, 1080p, try your hardest to get a 660 Ti or 7950 around $300. Your final cost should be $200 or less if you can sell your GTX 560 (the 2GB ram should fetch a bunch more than the standard 1 GB).

Good luck!

I like the free games with the 7950... But does anyone think i should wait for the 700 series cards?
post #16 of 126
You are going to be waiting a while for the 7-series Nvidia or 8-series AMD (some articles point to late Summer 2013, others nearly 2014). They are still both going to be on a 28nm process, so there is not going to be as much a generational gap between, say an HD 6870 and a HD 7870 or GTX 560 and GTX 660. New architectures and new processes for the current 6-series Nvidia's AND 7-series AMD, and a year's run, means the drivers have matured a lot (and still have a long way to go), all on very good, state-of-the art power-efficient hardware.

I would get a 7950. My brother is looking to build cheap but potent, and IMO the 7950 is the way to go, but I am also partial to a single PCB graphics solution. Don't get me wrong, Fermi can be an absolute beast (I have OC'ed my 590 to 850MHz and it's a brute) but unless you invest in strong cooling or buy non-reference cards, it's not a quiet architecture.

Plus selling your current 560 can help offset the cost of the 7950, whereas there is no cost offset with a second 560. I am a diehard Fermi fan, but for cheap and potent 7870XT and 7950 are the winners.

I don't want to wait 6-12 months, so i will probably take yours and Karlitos advice and spring for the 660Ti or the 7950. I need to research both and see which is better - Have you done a comparison for yourself and what made you decide for the7950?
post #19 of 126
On a side note, have you tried running Metro on your GTX 560? You may be surprised. If you skimp on the AA /AF a bit. Mine old GTX 560 played it reasonably well at 1920x1080 in "High Quality" (over 30FPS, with occasional dips). It was playable.

MKHunt, +1. Forgot about the 7870XT/Tahiti LE. That plays at a much lower price point, and has extreme overclocking potential, being a Tahiti die with a 512 SPUs missing. Chances are, you won't miss the gig of ram and memory width at 1080p.

Camp out on something like this.

Comes with two games, too.

My friend had a 660ti for a solid three weeks before getting a 680. He went from a single 560Ti to 660Ti. He was impressed at the performance difference, but it just didn't cut it for him in Skyrim. The 660Ti also has a 192-bit memory bus, and WILL choke at resolutions above 1080p. Having tasted the beauty of 1440p, if I were to spring for any GPU at this point in time I would require sufficient bandwidth to run a 1440/1600p monitor since the prices are slowly coming down and more and more OEMs are producing them. The other problem with the 660Ti is that its performance is very inconsistent. In some titles it will surpass a 580 easily and in others it's not much better than a 560Ti whereas the 7950 is more consistent in the reviews and reports I've seen.

There's also the GPU heirarchy that I take into account

680 <-> 7970
670 <-> 7950
660Ti <-> 7870

With the 7950 they seem to have a higher performance potential where the 660 seems to have lower OC headroom. But that's just my reading and thoughts, no real science behind it.
