How can i make skyrim use the amount of ram i desire?

Thread Starter
Hey, i've modded skyrim with some good highres textures, but the game either totally freezes or quits to desktop every time it exteeds 3.1gb ram.

So here is my question: HOW can i make skyrim use up to 8gb ram?

Is there a modded 64bit exe for the game made by modders out there?

Cause if not, then the 3gb of textures i have downloaded was for no use.

Correct.

The game currently only uses about 2-2.5gb video memory, but crashes right after it hits 3.2gb RAM usage :/

Whoops... sorry.

Sounds like a game limitation

Edit:

Ah, yeah, it's a 32-bit game. It's a limitation to the game itself and the way it was made.

This is a limitation of 32 bits. The 2G limit was a part of windows, by limiting the ram for any one program to 2G max, that left plenty of RAM for the operating system and the background processes that are always there.

64 bit operating systems can see far more ram, much more than your mother board can have installed. However, Windows still limits the amount of ram it can use - to 'only' 192G Note: MS has artificially limited Win7 home basic to 8G and home premium to 16G. even if it is 64 bit. Only the Win7 pro and up can use up to 192G..

But even though Winx64 pro can address 192G of ram, because the game was made for a 32 bt windows, it can still only use a maximum or 4G of ram. But on a 64 bit system,it can use the entire 4G for the game if you do have more. That pesky operating system and background processes can be moved into the extra ram you have leaving the 4G free for the game.

We will not see more than that allowed until the games are actually made for 64 bit operating systems and are no longer backwards compatible to older 32 bit operating systems

In the early days of Skyrim modding a special script mod was needed to enable the game to us to use 4GB of RAM. Skyrim has long since been patched to allow 4GB of RAM to be utilized.

I feel silly for suggesting this but... update your game? lol

It was already hooked on "can handle more than 2gb ram".

I figured as much. Idk why I even bothered. lol Have you checked your load order? What makes you so sure that it's your RAM usage that is causing your CTD instead of say, conflicting mods?

I checked many of my mods and deactivated all mods that could be a conflict with another.

Im sure it's the ram usage cause i monitor it's usage with the task manager, and every time it reaches 3.12gb the game either freezes or crashes.

That's really strange. If it has something to do with your RAM apposed to your VRAM I can't really think of what the issue could be. I've never actually monitored my RAM while playing Skyrim. If I remember tonight I'll take a peek at what I run at. It will at least give you more information to narrow down the cause of your game crashing.

Just throwing ideas out there now. Is the crash happening only with Skyrim? Maybe one of your RAM modules are failing...
