XP activation codes just a couple of questions - Page 2

You'll beable to reinstall it, its not that you can only activate it once its that your supose to only activate it on one computer. If anything doesn't go through call them up and tell them that the system is the same you just changed the CPU~ I haven't been able to activate without calling them since I first installed it.

I have done it numerous times myself. I am using the OS Key I got with my CyberPower PC. I've replaced every component from that build. I've had to reactivate XP at least 8 times. The first 2-3 times allowed me to do it via internet. Afterwards, it required me to call in. They ask if it is the same OEM PC... technically, it is... even though every component has been swapped (Theseus's paradox). I just say yes to the guy and he lets me reactivate. I feel no guilty... I paid for the OS and have never installed it on any other system.
Once again...

no prob. dont tell them anything you dont need too... the truth will work. upgraded. not on any other system. they cant tell over the phone

if your really worried, install without the network plugged in, and activate by phone right away, once activated, plug in. that way there's no way they can tell whats what. they reall dont care to much about home users, i've had xp on 3 computers in my house, one cd key, and they've activated me.

Exactly what we've been telling him. It's the same computer so there will be no problems other than he may have to call them up to activate.

Having experience with this matter it can be tricky. MS considers that once you change the motheboard, you've made a "signficant change", and must get a new license.

The trick is to try and activate, and if that fails, call them up... you'll punch in the "installation code" (like 30 digits) and if you're lucky, the phone system will let acknowledge and give you a new key... if not, you'll be transfered to a rep.

Now, when you get the person on the phone you'll want them to know that you've uninstalled the license from the old hard drive and are trying to install on a new harddrive. They might try to scare you by repeating: "Is this the ONLY computer that has this license?" to which you repply yes.

This isn't a workaround, it's a means to make sure that MS understands what you are doing. It's worked for me when I upgraded.

A Motherboard change only really warrants you having to re-activate. Hdd and CPU change dont.
