Better Value: 2nd Hand 1055T or Brand New FX-8350? - Page 2

When you say FX you're talking about two different architectures, Bulldozer and Piledriver. If you want to wait for Steamroller release and buy 2 processors, the Thuban and then Steamroller pick the Thuban.

If its more within your budget to just buy 1, get the Vishera.

The OP can always resell the thuban, if he upgrades to steamroller, with out loosing
much money. lets say 25 - 50% resale value when steamroller for either 1055T and FX-8320/8350.
Most likely either one will resell for more but to make it easy. 1055T sells for $75 and FX-8320 for $150
when steamroller gets released. most likely the OP can resell the 1055T for the same price that he paid
because they don't make any more and for AM3 user the x6 series is the highest CPU they can get.
while AM3+ user are supposed to be getting steamroller. Vishera and Zambezi resell value will
drop. Here in the states 8-core Vishera are going for only a few dollars more than used 1090T/1100T
but that isn't the case in other parts of the world.

Plus (I could be wrong) but all 890 based motherboards that support FX-8150 ( Crosshair IV / Asrock 890GX Extreme3)
are beta BIOS (890GX Ex3 Beta BIOS is P3.10B). Does anybody know if the 890GX Extreme 3 has throttling issues with FX-8320/FX-8350?

Asrock 890GX Extreme3 (BIOS P3.10 latest official) on list 95W zambezi [FX-4100/6100] I know people run FX-8150 oc to 4.0GHz on it.

If you already have the board make sure it doesn't have throttling issues with FX-8320/FX-8350.

I don't have the 890GX Extreme3 yet, but that's the mobo I'm planning on upgrading to in short order. From what I've read up on it so far, it shouldn't have problems with an 8350/8320. It definitely won't bottleneck from VRM overheating at least, since it's an 8+2 phase board. Anyway, if my decision becomes 890GX+Thuban then upgrade/resell to get funds for SR, I'll be reselling the board too (gonna get it for ~$100, and with any luck can regain most of that due to scarcity of the board) to upgrade to a 990FX. I currently am highly opposed to getting a 990FX-based board right now, since I had a downright horrible experience with the GA-990FXA-UD3; resold that mother for >90% original price. Besides, it's overkill for the PII 555 I have right now.

It was my experience when unlocking (or trying to unlock) my 555. Sure, without unlocking any extra cores, OC performance is great, stellar even. Unlocking the 3rd core brought about a whole slew of stability issues though, none of which I experienced on my crappy (but still functioning) M4N68T-M. And just trying to get that 4th core to unlock... Let's just say I've tried to leave the past behind me and look forward to better things.

EDIT: I should also probably mention that it was the R3.0 revision, and I seem to be part of the early adopters that discovered how sucky the UEFI BIOS was only after putting down the money.

Actually, from what I learned of The Tech Report's highly illuminating coverage on multi-GPU configurations and the *cough* highly *cough* denied *cough* problem of micro stuttering, I intend to stick with single-card solutions for the foreseeable future. I'd reckon keeping the savings I'd make from buying the Thuban chip, and eventually earning enough for the inevitable Oculus Rift down the road. If I ever want to upgrade my graphics power, I'll resell the 7850 and get maybe a 7970.

Why don't you just get a FX-6300? It's right in the middle of the two. thumb.gif

Just want to get a feel of the current majority recommendation (hm, maybe I should have put a poll).

Get a Phenom II X6 1055T for $115 and OC to 4.0GHz: 4-5
TheDoug, Heuchler, aLb.Strykr(?), FlashFir (Thuban -> SR), Zamoldac

Get a Vishera FX-8350 for $212.5 and OC to 5.0GHz: 0
Hm...

Get an FX-8320 for $186 and OC to 5.0GHz(?): 1-2
malmental, Hattifnatten(?)

Get an FX-6300 for P6,200/$155 and OC to ?.?GHz: 1
StayFrosty

Hope I got the stats right. Based on the prevailing opinion (and assuming you all made this recommendation after reading and understanding my use case, priorities, etc.), and unless several more people say 8320, I'll lock my sights on the Thuban.
