i7 920 to 3570k: worth $150?

Thread Starter
Hi!

A friend built my PC 3 years ago. It currently has an i7 920 cpu in it. Motherboard... I'll have to look up. But it wasn't a budget model at the time. Memory was corsair 1333mhz. 1600mhz would be a $90 upgrade!

I'm contemplating an upgrade to a 3570k? The chips are cheaper today, like $190, and can come with mb bundles (my old mb won't be compatible with the 3570k), for another $65 for the discounted mb bundled with the chip. Figuring I can get $100 back from my old mb + i7 920, it will cost me a difference of $150 to upgrade. OK-- add $20 for a better cpu cooler, too.

Will it be a $150 improvement?

I have never looked at overclocking before/ do not know how hard it is. Once you weigh in with your advice, THEN I will start reading all the guides on either overclocking the i7 920, or the 3570k
It might be the most bang for my buck to research overclocking the i7 920 that I already have, than pay a bundle for a new cpu.
OR of course, buy the 3570k and overclock it as well.

thanks for the advice!

honeslty i would overclock that 920 to 4.0ghz and hold off for a little longer.

wait for haswell, thats what i'm doing will be worth the wait IMO
i7 920 stock is running at a pretty measly clock rate, if you have a D0 even a 3.8ghz overclock should be nothing more then few bios changes if you have a CPU cooler thats half way decent that is.

Even if you were running a GPU heavy setup (flagship SLI/Crossfire) then an i7 920 on an overclock should handle just fine.
So sexy it Hz

I probably wouldn't do it, especially with Haswell peaking its head around the corner on Socket 1150.

how much do you think it will cost?

I switched my i7 920 (+Mobo / kingston budget ram / CPU cooler) to a 3770k, but i got almost 295 US dollars for it, and was 3½ years old.
The newer sata is pretty nice, i can feel a difference in boot time and such.
It did also improve my E-peen biggrin.gif by upping my score in Heaven benchmark ( can post some pics later if you want )

Same exact setup you have there...Overclocked my i7 920 DO to 4.0ghz at 1.25v, added Antec Kuhler, plus HD 7950. I am loving it....gave brand new life. Our 920 is no joke and still more than capable of handling current games....dont underestimate its potential..
