i7 920 to 3570k: worth $150? - Page 3

Grab a cheap CoolerMaster Hyper 212+ or EVO for that older chip imo....unless a higher end cooler like a H100i or Noctua D14 will work on the new stuff coming out.

+1 for stick with yours.
1st gen i5/i7s are still fine for gaming, esp with a good OC.

Plus if you're going to upgrade you may as well wait a few months for the new stuff.
Even if you decide prices/performance on Haswell isn't worth it vs Ivy, you'll be able to pickup 1155 stuff cheaper then.

I have a C0 i7 i've overclocked to 3.8, paired with a GTX 670. It has no problem running the latest games. Just get a good cooler and follow a guide like this...

http://www.overclock.net/t/538439/guide-to-overclocking-the-core-i7-920-or-930-to-4-0ghz

Pay special attention to the Uncore/VTT esp if you're getting faster ram. I had to fiddle with this a lot and Vcore some to eliminate BSODs using Handbrake or intensive games such as the Witcher 2.

I found that using a multiplier of 20x worked great with a BCLK of 190. This also allowed my RAM to run at 1600 mhz with a memory multiplier of 8x. Hope this is helpful.

sounds like a plan!

I DO have a microcenter near me: a 3570k is still $190, coupled with a $65 motherboard, and likely, $100 in memory (I have 6x2gb now... so I'd want 4x4gb in an upgrade), and tax, don't forget... is $375. I can only get $150 back from my existing cpu/mb/memory

It sounds like my cpu is barely limiting anything, anyway, and the gpu upgrade I just bought was the better purchase.

An h100 cooler plugs right into my existing case for $100, and unlike buying a 3570k which is going to immediately get even cheaper in June with Haswell, the h100 should be also able to be used with whatever cpu/mb upgrade I might do in 6mo-1yr?

h100i ordered btw smile.gif

A stock 920 to a 3570k is not a bad upgrade and going by the previews Haswell is not a that big of a step forward. Even so getting a 920 to do 3.6 GHz (even a C0) is pretty damn easy and with a decent clock like that it will do very well in today's gaming so unless you need more CPU power for other then gaming then there is no real need to upgrade.

Hmm waste money on cooling on an older chip?

Always upgrade when you can, it's cheaper. Take advice given here with a grain of salt.

not worth imo. how many GB or RAM does it have? 6GB is plenty and the cost for 1600 speeds are closer to $50. i'd say wait for haswell as well.

wait, will haswell system use ddr3?

you can get a 3770K for about the same price in microcenter if i am not mistaken.

I also agree with alot of people here wait for the new chips and get a SSD and new cooler in the time you have if you want.
