How do you feel about buying used/refurbished video cards?

Thread Starter
Title states it all.

If its under warranty, shouldnt it be technically okay? Like... i could just RMA it when i get it used; to get it checked by the manufacturer; wait a week or so and bam ... instant approved/refurbished card?

Id love to spend money on new 7950 or maybe 670, but what if i came onto a good deal with a used 7970 or a used 680??

The video cards i listed are just examples though. My problem isnt figuring out the performance of cards; its just... i'd like the BEST card i can get, for the money im spending; and say if you buy it used... what are the problems that you can come up; with buying a used video card?

if its broken, i can just RMA, right? -- is there a way i can get the serial number or some sort of proof from the guy im buying my used video card from ... and is there a way i can check if there is still a warranty behind the card? can i call the manufacturer and ask? how does it work out?

I just want to know if i have any "security" when buying used video cards... i figured if it works; no moving parts.... i should be fine?

I plan on buying a full block and going water cooling; so i dont even care if the fan cooler/heatsink doesnt even work? ... i can always replace TIM myself? Are there any things i have to be looking out for before going in the "used" market?

Well if you go the Ebay route, you are covered by Ebay buyer protection. I don't have any problems with the cards I bought there.

Used is okay ... as long it doesn't have any artifacting

Ebay buyer protection is the last thing i want to rely upon online. Ebay's policy depends on stupid paypal and it's always kaput
What if you close a dispute after your seller "promises" to agree then he backs out again? Paypal won't let you reopen the dispute or open another dispute from this sale

Artifacting? is that just natural degradation of the video card? I mean if someone tells you "the card works fine with no artifacting"... thats really all you can base it on right?

I just wish i could find some sort of security behind buying a used card. If it is artifacting; a simple RMA should do the job if warranty is in place right? -- (how do i check how much warranty is left on a used product?)

I have bought a lot of used video cards and I have never had an issue with any of them. I always feel like I am taking a chance with them but that's with any thing you buy is the other side I see of it. Just because it's new doesn't mean that is going to work you always have a chance to get a DOA with used stuff it's always higher. thumb.gif

What are problems that you could face with a video card?

1) Dead on arrival

2) Not DOA, but gets artifacting?

3) Crashes or causes BSOD/instability

... all of which... brings me back to my question.... should be easily fixable with a simple RMA to manufacturer right?

I just dont want to spend 400 on a used card and be like "oh this video card is DOA-- now i cant return it and im screwed" mad.gif

I have bought many cards in the past second hand and saved quite a bit of money from it. It's actually the way to go if your budget is tight. Honestly, there is very little difference b/w used and new apart from it being in a clean brand new package.
Used cards although carry some risk but that's not to say that new cards don't either. Brand new cards can be dead of arrival too. Used cards are slightly used but most of the time you don't keep your card for more than 2-3 years anyway.

If your card is DOA then you can RMA provided it's still under warranty and that your card is from Manufacturers that go by serial numbers.

Just be a little careful of who you buy your cards from though. Sometimes people are shifty and they'll send you a card that's already dead and won't claim any responsibility for it.(they'll write that on ebay) so approach those sellers with caution. Yeah, scammers like that exist unfortunately but like I said, you should always buy a card from a reliable reseller.
Their reputation is a good indicator of how well they are as a seller.
good luck

edit:

looks like you want to do water cooling. I think that voids the warranty if you try to modify the card but that again depends on the manufacturer.

I'd never pay full price for a video card considering they more often than not depreciate by nearly half the original cost after being in the market for only one year. My 7970 was bought used for $250+shipping, and I still have over three and a half years left on the warranty. This card will be covered long after I get rid of it, just like every card Ive bought before it. If you find a good deal and reputable seller go for it. If you buy refurbished make sure you read the warranty info provided by the site selling them, they typically have coverage plans of a year or longer for cheap.

Heh. Some guy sold me a 4830 for 10$ with me thinking it would be a good deal but anything that goes up to high FPS will introduce crazy amounts of artifacting.
Old games like BF2 and WC3 causes that. I'll try Vsync and see if it goes away
