[Q] Help on Overclocking Q8200 CPU with Asrock Board

Thread Starter
Hi first let me say Hi to everyone, noob here so go easy please.

Specs of Computer :

ASROCK G31M-S 2.0 (Bios 2.10)
Q8200 CPU
750W PSU
4GB DDR2 MEMORY
500GB HDD
NVIDIA GTX 260 XFX

Basically i want to try and overclock the CPU to around 2.8GHz if thats reasonable....
Still have the stock fan on the CPU and no cash to spend as its my sons PC and only wants to use it for Flight Games etc..and school stuff.
So I have the honours on trying to do this for him rolleyes.gif

He got the Computer from a friend and it works with no issues, havent connected the Graphics Card yet as hes still using the onboard just now..
Waiting for a DVI to VGA before we can get to use it.. should be coming today..hopefully!

Seen this here : Someone else has the same set up as me

I added a reply but just incase the other user has got rid of the stuff or no longer on here, decided to ask myself ...

Here is what i have (nothing has been touched)

The image below is not of the bios, but is roughly the same I have more options for Memory below...
Also the 266 should be 333 and the 8 would be 7

On the Asrock Board it says :
FSB 1600
DDR2 800

I know this isnt the greatest of boards.. but we all hope for the best...
Remember new at this ..thanks if you could help smile.gif

The Q8200 isn't a good overclocker for its extremely low multiplier so all you can do is increase the cpu frequency but I don't think you could go past 350MHz without bumping the PCIE frequency, which is dangerous, on this board since it's a G31.

(by the way, you can take actual screenshots using the Print Screen key on the keyboard and then saving it as a .PNG file in Microsoft Paint. You can also use Alt+Print Screen to capture only the active window)

I don't think it's going to overclock much past 2.4 GHz (if it makes it that far) for the following reasons:

  1. The Q8200 isn't a good overclocker
  2. ASRock's socket 775 motherboards are terrible for overclocking (they were avoided much like we avoid ECS motherboards)
  3. The G31 chipset is also terrible for overclocking
  4. Intel's stock CPU cooler is notoriously bad for cooling overclocked CPUs - but this is nothing compared to the first 3 points

I apologize for being so negative, but I'm just being honest.

If you see the link I posted about someone elses you see they are past 2.8 GHz but cant get a hold of the user

Before posting tried youtube videos to see what they had ..
Followed 1 person changed the 333 to 420 which gave me 3GHz+ and was ok until i rebooted and then stopped on Windows Logo.. but all i changed was the 333

Which motherboard did they have?

What do they have for CPU cooling?

Also, the memory you have installed plays a big role too because it will be overclocked along with the CPU.

Motherboard they have is a Foxconn G31MX-K and stock cooler

On the Asrock website for this board they have an OC Tuner which helps overclocking ?

Yeah, that's a better motherboard than the ASRock.

They probably also have good memory that can handle the overclocking.

I forgot to ask something: do you know which make and model power supply is in your son's computer? Some PSUs are not safe for overclocking regardless of their rated wattage.

Give me a few minutes and will open it and see

Says Artic Blue 750W .. Just found another PSU in the box but its a 600W Alpine but with 1 PCI-E on it as opposed to the 2 on the one fitted.

Bearing in mind, my son got this for nothing..from a friend and so far it meets his requirements, but just wanted to boost the CPU a little if possible.
Dont know why it worked after reboot when I changed the setting to 400 from 333 then hanged on 2nd reboot (only tried this for 5 mins)
Then reverted back to stock as i wasnt sure on what to do....with the settings,

So either 2.6 or 2.8 would be happy.. just seen another link before shutting down PC
(Had to translate page someone exact same specs as mine apart from memory and PSU)
Has theres at 3.4GHz stable... mad.gif
