Recommend Me a Website Setup for Forums/Articles/News

Alright, looking to transition a website to something easier to maintain and more current.

What the website functions as is a place to post news a few times a year, have an archive of articles/FAQ's, and a forum so people can ask questions. Ideally, this setup will have honey pots and content filters to avoid getting spammed. It would be awesome if I could transition our current member list (names/emails) into the new setup, but understand if that is not possible or too much work. I wouldn't even know what to request from the database or how to install those users into the new database so they are ready to go. But, I do know when people register that are new to the forum section, that an confirmation email should go out so they must confirm their humanity.

Could anyone please suggest a setup? Obviously willing to pay a monthly fee for whatever setup/software.

Thanks!

Depends on your needs entirely. Wordpress would be great the articles/news. For the forum, it would either be SMF or vBulletin. You'd need a mod/plugin to integreate the two. The best way to get what you need without knowing anything technical would be to hire a consultant/freelancer and they would be able to assist you more.

I can do advanced versions of all this, but the person needing the basics such as posts/articles/forum seems to need something simple. I have ideas for that which resemble something similar to what you posted. But, I don't have the time to build things from scratch for this person and basic site tools, freeware, things like wix, wordpress, and so on are perfect for certain uses. If they fit a budget and purpose they certainly are faster than doing something from scratch. And then having to make it easy for someone without tech knowledge to post updates, use forum, etc. is the challenge without myself investing large amounts of time. They may think it pretty simple, but you and I know better which is always annoying when someone says, "I am sure it is simple and easy, and won't take long, etc." when in reality they are saying "I don't know how to do it and because I am not asking you to build ebay or Amazon it shouldn't take long and I am very cheap as well."

Definitely. If you dont want to invest a large amount or time into the project and they still need to have both then I'd still stick with Wordpress and go with SMF for the forum. Both are simplest versions of their respective categories that I know of. The community for both are great, lots of devs and tutorials... The only possible thing I believe that would take time to do is the integration between SMF and WP. Depending on the master/slave setup it could take a week or less for basic functionality and for advanced permissions you would likely end up needing to use SMF as the master.
