[CNET] Internet tax proposal up for a vote in Senate this week - Page 5

Really the online retailers should have to collect the taxes for any state in which they ship product too. We know from studies that people almost never self report and it does two things, deprive states of needed income and create a further competitive imbalance between brick and mortar and Internet based companies.
The law just needs to be written so that if you ship goods to a person in a state, you collect any sales tax for that state.

I was really wondering why federal taxes were not applied at least. In canada only federal tax is applied and that's 5% vs 15% enough to prevent my to buy local (most of the time they try to milk you with price-match including shipping).

They ALREADY say that because that is the CURRENT law. They are changing this to having the companies responsible for the tax instead of the buyer because it is way too difficult for the government to regulate in any other way. Basically, every time you buy something online without paying you are performing tax evasion unless you live where there is no sales tax.

On the other, who does the tax go to? If I buy something from NewEgg, I pay tax because they have a shipping plant in TN (I assume TN gets the sales tax from this). If I bought something from TigerDirect and I had to pay sales tax to TD (they ship from GA most of the time for me), does GA get my sales tax? If I'm going to pay it, I'd rather TN get it, though I usually hate buying from NewEgg (Amazon generally has better prices in my experience)

That's easy. You have to pay sales tax to Newegg because they have what is called a nexus (physical presence) in TN. It isn't any different from TigerDirect. TigerDirect just doesn't HAVE to charge you because they don't have a nexus in TN. You still owe the money when you buy from TigerDirect. The sales tax is based on where the item is bought. Online purchases are based on where the buyer lives. So everything you buy would have the TN sales tax and all of the taxes would go to Tennessee.

Long story short, this tax isn't new. It's just that nobody has been paying it. This proposal just makes the current tax much easier to enforce for the government and an extra for some of the retailers. I say some because there are places like HomeDepot that have a nexus in pretty much every state so they already had to do this stuff anyways.

That's exactly what this proposal is doing. I don't think it is where you ship to though, but where the buyer lives.

How about we close the massive loopholes that these gigantic corporations use by sending money overseas before we worry about 13 cents on Bob's coffee maker that he bought from Amazon.

While i do understand that without taxes the government can't do anything so they're needed, i'd hate them to be applied to the US.

Why? Because i don't even live there. And i flatly refuse to pay taxes to someplace that i won't ever benefit from.

No, it shouldn't tax online. The government should have ZERO jurisdiction on the internet, since it is a global entity.

Why should the government take money from online sales when it costs them nothing for it. The government shouldn't tax things just because they can

what if ... someone from Finland buys something from Oregon ?

i dont think its a good idea to charge tax to a internet sale , its going to be more complicated than we think

... this is a fight between the non-internet store "stores" and the internet ones , thats all frown.gif

Perhaps, those of you within reality should start calling out the fiscal lies when you hear them. Make sure the people that need to hear you, hear you. Just remeber your money does the talking, if you don't want the massive corporation to sell you the slightly cheaper item, don't buy it there.

When you order something internationally (at least in Canada) it shows up with a customs charge attached. The current tax rate 5% federal + x% provincial + a customs percentage + if its shipped with a courier a $10-$20 "brokerage fee" for handling the paperwork.
