GPU 2 overheating

Thread Starter
resontly just setup up my crossfire with an engeneering sample, had to flash the bios the same as my other 7970 to get it to work properly, anyway right to the point, when gaming everything runs awesome but when I exit the game I noticed GPU2(new ES) is howering around 96C!!!!! wile GPU1(sapphire ref) is at 68C.... I know what your thingking, and no they're not beside eachother
GPU1- PCI-e x16 slot 1
GPU2- PCI-e x16 slot3

so there is plenty of space between them. I took the overclock down to 950/1400 to see if that helped, and no It diddnt..... I even manually set the fan profile in sapphire trixx and it helped GPU1 but seemed to have no effect on GPU2....I can confirl both cards are spinning anyone else have this happen top them? any suggestions????

thnx, MALO

Try card solo and set fan speed to 100% to verify the fan is indeed ramping up. Test temps and take note if there still abnormal. If you do a reseat of the cooler take a picture of the bottom of the heat sink and post it...maybe there are some imperfections on the bottom causing poor contact.

Also I would recommend replacing the TIM on the card. Do what he (^) said first though. I replace the thermal paste on all of my cards to Coolaboratory Liquid Ultra. IMO it is hands down, the best TIM out there. It is conductive so just be careful when applying it. It comes with a brush though so it makes it easy to apply.

ok, looks like I need a new heatsink, I took it off to replace the TIM and there is a big dent in the copper where it makes contact.... resulting in same issues

You could buy a copper shim like this.
http://www.frozencpu.com/products/14971/ex-blc-1051/EK-VGA_Supreme_HF_HD7970_Cu_Adapter.html
Just put tim on the die, stick the shim on then coat the top of the shim with liquid ultra.

edit:
Not sure if you will need longer replacement screws though

Damn dude you really aren't having luck with this second card! Yea must be a faulty fan. Did you make sure that the cable from the fans is plugged into the pcb nice and tight bud?

You know what you could do? You could just sand that down and then either cut the screws by the length that you sanded or find screws that are a couple mm's shorter. Unless you want to melt pennies and pour them over the dent haha

Just makes sure there is nothing else as tall as the heatsink because it won't sit evenly if there is. If you do something like this you are going to need pressure paper to make sure that it is even.
