Need help for professional workstation graphics

Thread Starter
Hi,
I am a CAD professional & I work primarily in 2d. I am running AutoCAD & I also view ALOT of very very large pdf's.

I need help with a graphics card recommendation that will be powerful enough to quickly browse through hundreds of pages of large pdf files with lots of drawing & geometry information & handle drafting in large 2d cad files such as grading plans.

Budget is flexible

I was thinking of Quadro K2000, but I don't know how well suited that is to my needs, or if it's not powerful enough.

Thanks in advance

Note;
this will be for a modern pc running win 7 on an ASROCK extreme 7 z68 gen 3 w/ 8 gb ram & i5-2500k

I would recommend getting one with the largest memory.

You won't see much performance improvement in 2D AutoCAD and zero improvement while viewing PDFs by using a Quadro or FirePro. The primary difference in 2D is the ability to run 64x FSAA to smooth out the thin jagged lines, and deep color for 3D modeling.

The problem with viewing those large PDFs is that Acrobat Reader displays all of those drawings as scaled bitmap content, and I believe it's all processed directly by your CPU. There's no hardware acceleration available, so it doesn't really matter which GPU you use - it's going to all look and work about the same.

Unfortunately, to get the same 3D performance as your GTX 580, you're going to have to invest in at least a Quadro K4000 or K5000, and of the two, I think the K4000 is probably "slower" than the 580.

I was afraid of that. Sounds like there's not much point in upgrading to Quadro from the 580 if the only difference is in 3d modeling.

Those large PDF's are a real PITA... maybe I can find a better pdf viewer that supports hardware acceleration....

2D acceleration is available in Acrobat http://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/2d-graphics-acceleration-gpu-support.html

Are you sure you have it enabled?

The 580 has the capability, but is no means a "PRO" graphics card, it lacks memory error correction, and also will not do tasks as good as a dedicated Quadro card, it will do the job however.

Quadro K2000 is a waste of money if the only real program you're using is Autocad and PDFs.

The K2000 is basically a GK107, or GTX 650/GT 640. You'll want a K4000 (GK106 which is basically GTX 660 or GTX 650 Ti) or K5000 (GK104 with GTX 680's number of CUDA cores) to see improvement

In double precision floating point, you would see a degradation actually.

The GTX 690 (and presumably GTX 680) can be physically modded to a K5000

Thanks for the tip, I didn't know Acrobat 9 had that option. I have it enabled now, & reduced resolution, that should help with redraw time.

AlphaC, thanks for the info, looks like K5000 would be the way to go if I did more 3d work... guess I'll just stick with the 580 for now, doesn't look like it would be worth it to upgrade
