secondly, most console games don't have a loading screen beyond the first setup. They've become good at masking loading screen and streaming in assets. Loading times are not an issue. There's people playing BF3 on pc with 5400rpm hard drives experiencing WAY longer load times than consoles do

Did you not see exactly where I said why? We are paying $60 for a game on a $0.5 or $4 disk. I understand there is overhead for the developers, I'm a CS student. I don't agree with the insane pricing when most ends up as corporate profit anyways. I'd much rather have a 30GB SSD that I slot into a system than a 50GB Blu-Ray disk that could be scratched, cracked, or snapped. I'd also much rather have the high speed data. I don't know where you got loading screens being absent, but even in large open world games like Skate 3, Halo: Reach, and Skyrim, I can visibly see the game stutter as it loads the next area. Another point in Skyrim is that there is a definite loading screen. Any time you enter a new area, be it a cave, city, etc. there is a loading screen. Developers have gotten good at compression and expansion so streaming is viable. I'd rather write a streaming function that loads uncompressed content, as I get the extra resources not used in uncompressing the content to have even higher quality content.

As for the 5400rpm drives loading slower, I disagree. My load times on a 6 year old 5400rpm 160GB SATA 1 drive are significantly lower than those of my 360, or my friends PS3. They're not as fast as my 7200rpm drive, for sure, but I have no clue where you get that they're slower than a console.

I just hope that the day doesn't come when we need to purchase an "unlock code" in order to drive a used car or read a book borrowed from a friend...

I'm not saying they will, I'm saying it would be ideal. Big difference between my opinion on how things will happen and my opinion on how they should happen.

Why would any game company decide to switch to SSDs at their own expense and then still sell at the same $60 retail price? Microsoft isn't out to give consumers the best value for their money, they're out to make the most money as you're willing to part with while spending as little as possible. You're entitled to your own opinion but it's frankly at complete odds with reality.

This is why it's an opinion on my ideals. If you want my opinion on what will happen, it's that we will end up with a service close to steam for each console in the next couple of decades. We may even be streaming the games, if ISPs can get their heads out where the sun shines and start upgrading networks to catch up with the rest of the world. I expect GameStop and other retail shops to close up, but if they don't, they'll be selling plastic cards with redeemable codes.

what's wrong with that? My "windows" account is lacrossewacker@yahoo.com pretty much my junk/spam email now, never even check it. But now, on any Microsoft device, I can sign in my account and all my personal interests will sync up. Skydrive will sync. My account balance will be there in the store for any apps.

Don't see a problem with having an account, especially since it actually has some very big Pros

Creating an emulator is difficult, let alone one that is efficient.

An emulator would be awsome, thank the lord we have one for the Nintendo 64!! Can't beat "007: Goldeneye"....

Back on topic... They should at least put games on USB 3.0 memory sticks, optical drives are bcoming obsolete..... except for Blu-Ray though, can't go wrong with that!
