Back on topic... They should at least put games on USB 3.0 memory sticks, optical drives are becoming obsolete..... except for Blu-Ray though, can't go wrong with that!

Optical drives and optical media are a very long time from being obsolete, Blu-ray has barely made a dent in most places, I walk into a video store, I see a tiny section of blu-rays i see 10bln Dvd's, Go into a Big shop? Same deal, Hell people still buy music on CD's at places like San1ty.

I'm not sure what super-console you're playing but both my 360 and girlfriends PS3 exhibit much longer loading times than the few games I keep installed on my 5400rpm Samsung HDD..Because 1) They use 5400rpm drives anyway and 2) If not, they're using CDs which are considerably outstripped by one of the IDE 80GB Seagates I keep in the closet for spare storage. I'm talking literally over double the speed in sequential performance. (24x DVD drive is 31.68MB/s, my IDE drives have been benched around ~50MB/s. For reference, the Xbox 360 uses a 12x drive for ~16.5MB/s, the PS3 is even slower I believe, or close at least)

I think instead of USB, have a custom connector...That way you can do like the SNES and I believe N64, and include extra RAM on cartridge if you think it'll benefit you.

This.... But it probably won't happen as Microsoft doesn't even read dream-on threads like this.

PS4 looks promiseing though, I'd wish they would get rid of the UI that looks like Windows 8, unless they plan on using Touch Screen updates later on.

I'd stick with the new Xbox myself though..... Only because of Forza Motorsport thumb.gif

THEN your console goes RRoD. Buy all your games again!

Wait if it's stored on an HDD, surely you can just plug it into another Xbox and it will work fine, RRoDs shouldn't effect the storage.

Also, since all the Xboxes will have the same hardware and OS as each other (obviously), surely if I had one and my game was on the hard drive, what's to stop me putting my hard drive in my mate's Xbox and running it without problems?

Like me bringing my PC hard drive to my friend's house and logging into Steam, then running my Steam games off of that.

I think they are going to try a disc-less or near disc-less business model soon, Resell your games?

Also for the most part this is true of a lot software products:

You are buying a license to use the product. The fact it is on a disc is a convenience that disc has no value beyond the plastic and whatever it's made of. The disc is a medium to use your license, that license can not be transferred. You own the medium. You can sell the medium but the corresponding license is invalid.

Example: Lets say we look at sports, say Station A buys exclusive rights to broadcast local NFL games, now can Station B buy those rights from Station A? No they were given a right to broadcast not resell it. They don't own it, but if station A puts it on a disc and sells it to Station B is that still allowed? No.

And 20 year old games I have on disc or cart that I only own the license too still work. The publishers can't take that away from me ever. 20 years from now they are still mine to play. My movies are also still mine to view despite how Hollywood feels about it.

If we roll over and accept this digital only crap which is "you only license" argument, we can and will lose access to all the content we put our money out for.

One point that people seem to not remember is that the current 360 and PS3 have less Ram than our phones. heck, the PS3 only 256mb of RAM. that's ridiculous. So loading times are currently necessary to swap in and out the data that's no longer able to fit. WIth the next gen of 4-8 gigs of RAM, they'll have way more flexibility with how much data they can keep in RAM and cut down on a lot of the loading.

Can't expect High End performance from these consoles in every aspect. People who play their video games from SSD's represent a VERY small %

Yeah, image that!! The console can play modern games on par with a medium spec PC having only 256 MB of RAM while my 1GB RAM phone can't even do the most basic thing without lag!!
It's all about optimization.
